Position Description
The Department of Radiology at the University of Washington is recruiting for one full-time (100% FTE) faculty position at the level of Research Assistant Professor with an anticipated, but flexible, start date of October 1, 2025. Research Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
This position will focus on the mitochondrial aging in the context of skeletal muscle and cardiac aging. Candidate will be expected to contribute to the internationally recognized strength of the Translational Bioenergetics Laboratory in the Department of Radiology in integrating molecular and biochemical mechanisms of mitochondrial aging with in vivo measures of mitochondrial energetics and muscle function and mobility. In addition, they are expected to have or form active collaborations throughout the UW research community to build on the strengths in geroscience and age-related diseases. The UW is home to NIA funded Centers, including one of eight Nathan Shock Centers for Excellence in the Biology of Aging, an Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC). In addition, the candidate is expected to collaborate with the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and Center for Translational Muscle to develop human cell models of aging. The candidate will work within the Translational Bioenergetics Laboratory under the direction of Dr. David Marcinek. Dr. Marcinek and the Department of Radiology will provide mentorship and career development opportunities to promote the candidate’s long-term success in the Department. All faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.
The candidate will be expected to develop an independent and collaborative research program focused on mechanisms of aging and/or developing interventions to improve health and quality of life in the aging population. They will also contribute in the mentoring of graduate students, undergraduates, and postdoctoral fellows within the Translational Bioenergetics Laboratory. The candidate would also be expected to celebrate and join our commitment to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable culture in Radiology by mentoring and working with, and collaborating with a broad community of individuals with varying backgrounds and experiences. Finally, the candidate would be expected to maintain a vibrant research program funded by extramural sources that adds value and dimension to the robust research program in metabolism, skeletal muscle biology and aging.
The base salary range for this position will be: $8,334 - $11,667 per month ($100,008 - $140,004 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
