"Research Assistant Professor"

Lingnan University is seeking applications for the position of Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy (Post Ref.: 25/126).

The Department of Philosophy at Lingnan University is renowned for analytic philosophy in Asia. It offers programs such as a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy and AI starting from 2025-26, and a Master in Arts in Artificial Intelligence and the Future in collaboration with the Hong Kong Catastrophic Risk Centre (HKCRC). The department supports HKCRC, which focuses on ethical and theoretical issues related to catastrophic risks including climate change, nuclear war, engineered pathogens, and artificial intelligence.

Requirements: Candidates must have a PhD in Philosophy or related disciplines by the start of the appointment, obtained no more than five years prior. A record of publications in leading journals is preferred. Expertise in philosophy of AI and/or ethics of risk is required. The appointee will conduct research, publish in refereed journals, apply for grants, and support departmental activities.

Research Duties: Carry out research in philosophy of AI and/or ethics of risk; submit papers to top journals; submit grant proposals; organize seminars and workshops; support HKCRC.

Teaching Duties: Teach three courses per year, including topics like Ethics and AI, A Philosophical Introduction to AI, Critical Thinking, and introductory ethics courses. Instruction is in English, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of capstone projects.

Service Duties: Perform administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Department.

Appointment Details: Competitive conditions with rank and remuneration based on qualifications and experience.
