Internship Opportunities, Summer 2026

The MRC Biostatistics Unit, one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions, is pleased to announce the launch of a Summer Internship Programme for 2026. Under this programme, successful applicants will be employed by the Unit to undertake work which contributes to the Unit's established research portfolio, organised around five research themes:

  • Biostatistical Machine Learning (BML)
  • Causal Mechanisms (CM)
  • Efficient Study Design (ESD)
  • Precision Medicine (PM)
  • Population Health (PH)

The interns will also learn about career opportunities in developing statistical methods for biomedical applications.

These internships are funded by NIHR and might ideally suit 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students and students having recently graduated in Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related field with a strong quantitative component.

See Further Particulars for the list of available projects. In the cover letter, the candidates are asked to rank their top three preferred projects and briefly outline their motivation for focusing on them.

The interns will be exposed to the day-to-day activities of a statistical methodologist in biomedical research, and they will learn about possible career paths. They will be allocated to a research theme and encouraged to participate in theme activities as well as group meetings with members of staff across the different themes.

The interns are expected to have intermediate knowledge of the statistical programming language R. There are no prerequisites of medical statistics knowledge, but curiosity for biomedical applications is essential. While previous experience is welcome, the purpose of the internship is to introduce interns from various backgrounds to the field of medical statistics and methodological research, and to the role of a biostatistician.

Successful candidates will be appointed to a fixed term full-time position (Monday-Friday) for 8 weeks in the summer 2026, starting on the 29th of June, as a Research Assistant. Please note that accommodation will not be provided for this position. The successful candidates are expected to be based in Cambridge. Limited budget might be available to support accommodation and/or travel expenses.

The Unit is actively seeking to increase diversity among its staff, including promoting an equitable representation of men and women. The Unit therefore especially encourages applications from women, from minority ethnic groups and from those with non-standard career paths. Appointment will be made on merit.

The applicants should submit a CV and a cover letter, which should outline why they have applied for this internship and what they plan to achieve by the end of it.

Closing date for applications: April 15, 2026. Interview date: April 28, 2026.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 23 August 2026 in the first instance.
