The Werner Siemens Chair for Synthetic Biotechnology at the TUM School of Natural Sciences of the Technical University of Munich in Garching is looking for a research assistant (TV-L E13, 65%) with the possibility of doctoral studies, starting in September 2025, for a period of 3 years.
The Werner Siemens Chair of Synthetic Biotechnology focuses on the isolation, characterization, and process-oriented optimization of enzymes and microorganisms for the production of industrial platform chemicals. The position is funded by an EU project focused on the biotechnological conversion of waste streams from food production into sustainable alternatives to animal products in cosmetics and agriculture.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Cultivation of oil-forming microorganisms on a scale of 250 mL to 10 L
- Process optimization of cultivation conditions
- Analysis and enzymatic hydrolysis of complex biomass
- Spectrophotometric and chromatographic process analysis
- Supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Students
- Communication with project partners from industry and academia
- Reporting in English
- Preparation of scientific publications in English
Your qualification profile:
To work on this complex subject area, we are looking for a committed, team-oriented, and creative individual with knowledge in the fields of biochemistry, enzyme technology, molecular biology, and instrumental analysis. Successful applicants should have laboratory experience in the cultivation of microorganisms, ideally with fermenter systems with a volume of up to 10L, and in-vivo enzyme production and purification. Knowledge of the genetic modification of microbial organisms as well as instrumental analysis with HPLC and/or GC systems is an advantage.
We expect a completed master's degree or diploma in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline. Very good German and English skills are also an advantage.
