Research Assistant - Vascular Biology Center
Job Summary
This position requires the ability to maintain mouse colony by crossing tissue specific mice with various floxed mice to make tissue-specific knockout mice. The successful candidate will perform genotyping assays to distinguish each of the mouse lines, set up breeder cages to maintain lines or generate unique combinations of lines for experiments, perform tamoxifen injections to induce the loss or gain of a gene's function in the mouse. A database, already in place, will need daily updating.
The candidate must be able to handle and work with mice as well as have organizational skills with the ability to multitask. This position will also work with members of a team of scientists, each of whom carries out a series of mouse experiments of human relevance. In addition, this position will perform plasmid amplification, tissue cutting and histological and immunofluorescence staining to assist lab member's work.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining mouse colony through selective breeding and culling
- Wean and genetically identify offspring through strain-specific genotyping assays
- Plasmid amplification
- Tissue cutting and immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analysis
- Analyzing gels and updating database
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.
OR
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.
Preferred Qualifications
Mouse handling and histological analysis experience
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, multi-tasking, problem solving and prioritization skills.
ABILITIES
Goal-focused energetic self-starter with the ability to maintain confidentiality. Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to complete work, meet deadlines and work independently with only general supervision.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Salary Range: {Min-Mid or list up to the budgeted amount which should not be more than the midpoint}
Pay Band: B5
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
