Research Assistant- Vascular Biology Center
Job Summary
Understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate blood vessel formation in ischemic cardiovascular diseases. The candidate will work with animal models relevant to a human disease, using multiple experimental techniques including cell culture, flow cytometry, real-time PCR, histological studies using transgenic and knockout animals. The candidate will present at laboratory meeting and interact with post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and personnel from core facilities.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine lab experiments including Plasmid expansion, Protein and RNA isolation, Western blot analysis, PCR, ELISA, and Immunohistochemistry according to the research protocols.
- Animal Colony maintenance including genotyping of transgenic/knock-out mice, animal breeding, assisting in animal surgery and post-surgical monitoring/recordings, and surgery log maintenance.
- Perform routine cell culture experiments including Cell line maintenance, assist in isolating primary cells from mouse tissues, monitoring liquid nitrogen tank levels and filling as necessary.
- Maintain laboratory equipment in good working order, perform routine maintenance, and coordinate repairs, inventory, and shared use.
- Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature, summarize findings, analyze results and procedures using manual and computer techniques.
- Cross coverage / other duties/tasks as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science or experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting; OR Associate degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with cell culture, animal breeding, genotyping, routine lab experiments like flow cytometry, western blot analysis, RNA isolation/qPCR.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, multi-tasking, problem solving and prioritization skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Willingness and ability to work with research animals. Ability to complete work, meet deadlines and work independently with only general supervision.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required). Salary Minimum: $17.88 hourly. Pay Band: B5. Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position. Recruitment Period: Until Filled.
