Skills/Qualifications
- Enrolled PhD student in Earth Sciences (Earth and Atmospheric Sciences)
- Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Geography, Meteorology, Hydrology, Climatology, Oceanography, Geology or a related field
- Python programming skills for processing and analysing large climate and geospatial datasets (e.g. reanalysis data, satellite time series)
- Experience with Copernicus products (Climate Data Store, Copernicus Marine Service) and reanalysis data (e.g. ERA5)
- GIS and remote sensing skills (QGIS, ArcGIS Pro or equivalent; multispectral satellite image processing, spectral indices)
- Interest in the morphodynamics of deltaic and coastal systems and in the climatic and anthropogenic factors controlling their evolution
- Availability to take part in field campaigns in the Danube Delta and on the Romanian Black Sea coast (measurements, data acquisition, sensor maintenance)
- Ability to work independently while being a good team player
- Good command of English (minimum B2 level)
- Any of the following is a plus: experience in wave climate and storm analysis; cloud geospatial platforms (Google Earth Engine, Microsoft Planetary Computer); machine learning applied to Earth Sciences; experience with field measurement methods (e.g. LiDAR scanning); conference presentations or publications; participation in international mobility programmes; category B driving licence.
Specific Requirements
- Automated global-scale extraction of delta surfaces and shorelines from land–sea masks derived from cloud-processed Landsat and Sentinel-2 time series (Google Earth Engine, Microsoft Planetary Computer)
- Building a database of climatic and anthropogenic forcing factors (wave and wind regime, sea level and tides, water and sediment discharge, upwelling/downwelling, teleconnection indices, river engineering and land reclamation)
- Applying machine-learning methods to attribute and rank the factors controlling delta shoreline dynamics
- Developing machine-learning predictive models of delta shoreline evolution and benchmarking them against the project's numerical models
- Validating results in key sectors of the Danube Delta against the project's in-situ measurements
- Participation in the field campaigns organized in the project, including measurements and sensor maintenance
- Participation, whenever requested, in the project team’s working meetings
- Drafting monthly activity reports
- Contributing to the drafting of the project deliverables
- Contributing to the writing of scientific articles, to the dissemination of results and to the open release of code and datasets (open science)
