Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Laboratory Analysis of Environmental DNA Samples
- Conduct DNA extraction and purification from environmental DNA samples collected from bee nests.
- Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot DNA extraction and PCR protocols.
- Prepare samples for DNA sequencing and downstream molecular analyses.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and organized laboratory notebooks and records.
- Ensure adherence to laboratory safety and quality assurance standards.
Field Collection of eDNA Samples
- Locate and identify bee nest aggregations in natural habitats.
- Assemble and maintain eDNA collection equipment and field supplies.
- Obtain landowner, agency, or stakeholder permissions for sample collection activities.
- Collect, preserve, transport, and store environmental DNA samples following established protocols.
Research, Data Analysis, and Scientific Communication
- Design and evaluate molecular primers for solitary bee species.
- Archive, manage, and analyze research data.
- Review and synthesize relevant scientific literature.
- Contribute to manuscript preparation and publication efforts.
- Develop scientific presentations and participate in professional conferences and meetings.
This is a term position based at Aronoff Laboratories on The Ohio State University Columbus campus. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2026, and continue through June 30, 2027. The position is budgeted at 75% full-time effort (0.75 FTE) with an annual salary of $49,067.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree or equivalent experience required; 3 years of relevant experience required with Bachelor's Degree, or 1 year of relevant experience required with Master's Degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Biology, Molecular Ecology, Entomology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field required; Ph.D. preferred.
- Experience with molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR, and/or DNA sequencing preparation, or experience conducting native bee field research and native bee taxonomy.
