Research Associate (Associate Process Engineer)
In this exciting role, you will perform data collection and processing, execute experiments focused on bioproduct recovery, and maintain equipment throughout the facility. This role involves working with technologies related to product recovery, purification, and upgrading, as well as supporting upstream processes such as deconstruction and catalysis, as needed.
This position will give you the opportunity to gain experience assisting with analytical chemistry and fermentation while working in an industrial biotechnology R&D environment. You will schedule and execute continuous pilot-scale recovery and purification processes (e.g., filtration, centrifugation, distillation), chemical unit operations at bench and 100L scales, and provide technical support for equipment and utilities at ABPDU's EmeryStation East and Potter Street locations. You will have the opportunity to support project milestones and interact with world renowned Scientists, Engineers, and other Lab research staff.
This position has an anticipated start date of September 15, 2025.
What You Will Do:
- Assist with the planning and executing of pilot experiments, and coordinating of resources for industry-based projects.
- Assist with the execution of pre-designed experiments related to catalysis and purification, focusing on meeting defined project and experimental objectives and generating data suitable for publication.
- Adhere to Lab safety protocols, including occasional on-call duties, upholding all Lab policies, contributing to and facilitating a strong safety culture.
- Assist with the selection, improvement, and maintenance of essential laboratory equipment and facilities used in operations.
- Execute routine lab activities such as maintaining experiment supplies and storage, general cleanup, waste disposal, among other routine tasks.
- Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of office property, digital and physical resources, and equipment.
- Assist with developing and implementing contingency plans to ensure smooth lab operations even during unexpected disruptions.
- Coordinate material receipts and client deliverable shipments in strict accordance with LBNL policies.
What is Required:
- A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related area and a minimum of 1 year of experience participating in R&D projects in a lab setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic knowledge of biochemical and chemical engineering unit operations relevant to bioproducts.
- General knowledge of downstream recovery processes, organic/inorganic/catalytic chemistry, and/or analytical chemistry.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain detailed and accurate laboratory documents and records.
- Effective interpersonal skills include the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary laboratory environment.
- Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Desired Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related area.
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and learn new techniques associated with other functions of the ABPDU (e.g. fermentation and analytical chemistry).
- Demonstrated experience with lab equipment and facility maintenance with safety compliance.
- Experience with downstream recovery processes, organic/inorganic/catalytic chemistry, and/or analytical chemistry.
- Relevant experience in lignocellulosic biomass chemistry and related characterization.
