Research Associate
Company: Virginia Tech
Job Location: Blacksburg, 24061
Category: Laboratory and Research
Type: Full-Time
Job Description
The Sahoo Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute studies the genetic and functional mechanisms that drive bone marrow failure, clonal hematopoiesis, and progression to MDS and AML. We integrate genomic and functional approaches on patient derived samples, iPSC and mouse disease models to uncover mechanisms and therapeutic vulnerabilities.
Current project areas include:
- Germline predisposition to MDS and AML: mechanisms by which inherited mutations cause hematopoietic failure and predispose to leukemogenesis
- Chromosome 7 aneuploidy syndromes: modeling monosomy 7 associated bone marrow failure and its role in clonal selection
- Clonal evolution and therapeutic vulnerabilities: using single cell sequencing to track clonal dynamics and to identify targets in high risk MDS and AML
Position Summary: We seek a full-time Research Associate to support cellular and in vivo studies. The role requires strong proficiency in wet-lab techniques, including molecular biology and mammalian cell culture. Experience with induced pluripotent stem cells is required. Mouse handling for hematopoietic studies is also required. Candidates without prior experience must be clearly willing to learn.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in biology and significant professional experience and equitable laboratory experience
- Expertise in experimental design and execution
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Excellent communication skills
- Extensive primary cell culture expertise
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with general mouse hematopoiesis and hematopoietic cancer models
- Familiarity with CRISPR-based genome editing and functional screens
