Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on the H-SIF funded project Commemorating and Constructing the Postcolonial Nation, directed by Dr Meghan Tinsley in the Department of Sociology, University of Manchester (UoM).

The project starts on 1st July 2024 and the contract is for 18 months. The Research Associate will be based in the Department of Sociology, in the School of Social Sciences.

Working under the guidance of the PI, you will have responsibility to conduct archival research in order to construct a comprehensive database of every statue erected by the state between departmentalisation (in Martinique) or independence (in Barbados, Ghana, and Guinea) and the present day. This will entail accessing digitised government archives and working in collaboration with external partners. To the extent that such information is available, the database will include information about the location and physical context of the statue, its material form and informational plaque, and links to primary sources. You will also be expected to travel to Conakry to conduct archival research at the Bibliothèque Nationale de Guinée.

In collaboration with the PI, you will play an active role in analysing the data, presenting the findings at conferences, and publishing co-authored academic articles.
