Research Associate / Fellow in Representation Theory

  • Full time three (3) year fixed term opportunity. Located in the Carslaw Building (F07) on the Camperdown Campus
  • Opportunity to contribute to research focused on representation theory and be part of a world-class team of mathematicians
  • Base Salary Level A/B $109,301 - $151,328 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest mathematical sciences schools in Australia, and the University of Sydney is the only Australian university to have received the highest rating of 5 out of 5 for research in the mathematical sciences in every Australian Research Council Excellence in Research for Australia assessment to date. The University also hosts the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute (SMRI), which attracts leading mathematical scientists from all over the world to do research with Australian collaborators.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate / Fellow in Representation Theory. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Kevin Coulembier and Associate Professor Daniel Tubbenhauer. The project is concerned with representation theory in a broad sense, with a focus on the role of monoidal (tensor) structures and on large-scale / asymptotic behaviour of algebraic and categorical constructions. The aim is to develop general methods and apply them to concrete families arising across modern representation theory.

Your key responsibilities will include several of the following:

  • demonstrate research excellence in representation theory, algebra, combinatorics or related fields
  • develop and document algorithms to assist mathematical research and discovery
  • develop research collaborations
  • assist with grant writing and the publishing of original work
  • supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • contribute to successful applications for competitive research grants and/ or funding to deliver research impact
  • develop your profile and the profile of SMRI in the above areas through conferences and seminars.

This position does not require teaching, but opportunities may be available for those who are interested.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Research Associate / Fellow who has:

  • a PhD (or near completion) in mathematics or statistics
  • demonstrated evidence of independent research ability and potential
  • primary research interests in representation theory, broadly interpreted
  • demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications skills, interacting with a variety of researchers and stakeholders
  • experience in at least one (1) of the following topics:
  • representation theory (e.g. Lie/quantum groups, Hecke algebras and related structures, geometric/higher representation theory)
  • Category theory (especially monoidal/tensor categories; diagrammatic or categorified settings welcome)
  • Combinatorial / analytic methods for algebraic structures (e.g. asymptotics, generating functions, probabilistic methods, analytic combinatorics)

Pre-employment checks

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
