The Faculty of Theology (Department of Old Testament Studies) at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen invites applications for the position of a

Research Associate (f/m/d)

starting August 1st, 2026, or as agreed. The position is initially limited to 4 years and can be filled either as a doctoral position covering 75 % of the regular weekly working hours (currently 29.85 hours/week) or as a postdoctoral position covering 100 % of the regular weekly working hours (currently 39.8 hours/week). Payment will be according to pay grade 13 TV-L.

The research focus should cover one of the following research areas or combine both: literary and theological history of the Old Testament (including the Septuagint), as well as the history of Israel during the Second Temple period, especially the Hellenistic-early Roman period.

The tasks include:

  • The implementation of a research project with corresponding publication activities
  • Teaching equivalent to 2 hours per week per semester (in English and, if necessary, after an induction period, in German)
  • The collaboration on projects and events organized by the chair and (for postdoctoral researchers) the acquisition of third-party funding
  • The participation in administrative, organizational, and communication tasks for the chair

Requirements:

  • Completed masters degree (or equivalent) in Protestant theology with a focus on the Old Testament or a doctorate in theology or a closely related subject with the mark of at least “very good”
  • Very good knowledge of Hebrew and Greek. The knowledge of other ancient languages (e.g., Aramaic) is an advantage
  • Very good written and spoken English skills

For applicants whose first language is not German, a basic knowledge of German is desirable.
