A position exists, for a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Power Electronics and Batteries.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.
The project will develop the technological basis and subsequently study transient behaviour of batteries and building test equipment for studying batteries. This will particularly involve the design of high-precision high-accuracy analogue electronics, wide-bandwidth low-voltage higher-current (at least 50 A) power electronics, the corresponding embedded control, and interface software. Good knowledge of operation amplifier circuits, their stability and limitations, and embedded controllers is desired. The successful candidate will work on both electronics design as well as battery testing and the explanation of the observations. The position is funded through an international collaborative research project, which will outline milestones with regular delivery of results.
The role holder is expected to generate novel concepts, analyse them theoretically, demonstrate their performance experimentally through developing and implementing prototypes, and generating professional set-ups that can be delivered to partners. Furthermore, the results should be documented and disseminated to the community in journal papers in tier-one journals of the field. The successful candidate will coordinate the work with the partners, report the status, and support the acquisition of funds for follow-on work.
Additionally, the successful candidate will ideally have experience in power PCB design, power electronic converters or high-current analog electronics, precise and accurate measurement electronics, and an understanding of amplifier selection.
Ideally, they will also hold familiarity with digital controllers/signal processors and control strategies, experience in embedded programming.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: experience in higher-current (lo-voltage) high-bandwidth circuits; precision amplifiers, low-noise and low-offset operational and instrumentation amplifiers, accurate analogue-digital conversion, embedded controllers; understanding of real-time measurement data streaming and storage; ideally previous knowledge in battery behaviour; proven track record of publishing in tier-1 journals; experience in dealing with international collaborations; and ability to prepare status reports and lead a status meeting.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD.
