Position Title: Research Associate - Internal Medicine (Gastroenterology)

Job Description Summary: The Research Associate in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, will support the Singh Laboratory's research on the gut-brain axis and intestinal inflammation. This role involves assisting with murine models of PTSD and gut inflammation, conducting laboratory experiments, and applying a variety of biochemical and imaging techniques. The Research Associate will help develop and run assays, contribute to data collection and analysis, and participate in the preparation of manuscripts, grants, and presentations.

Job Duties Outlined

  • Develop, validate, and run assays to support preclinical research using murine models of PTSD and gut inflammation, and other basic science research projects.
  • Prepare standard operating procedures for novel assays developed in the lab.
  • Disseminate knowledge and train other lab members on novel assays of general interest.
  • Understand the basic principles of instrumentation and recognize problems with assays when they arise, taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Review all data with the lab director/supervisor before releasing results to ensure completeness and alignment with the study's objectives.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, researchers, and clinicians at the University and external collaborators.
  • Assist the lab PI and lab Director/supervisor with the writing of manuscripts, grants, and study budgets. Present data at lab meetings and conferences.
  • Participate in conference calls with collaborators to facilitate research collaboration.
  • Contribute to the overall maintenance of the lab.
  • Train and mentor graduate students and other junior lab members.

Required Qualifications
Work Experience:

  • 6 years of relevant work experience. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Experience with current molecular biology techniques including experience working with DNA, RNA, protein, and cell culture, mouse handling as well as general molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with in vitro and in vivo studies.

Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master's Degree in biological sciences.
Work Experience:

  • Experience in cell signaling and proficiency with routine molecular biology techniques, cell culture, Western blotting, PCR/DNA cloning, and small animal handling/experimentation.
  • Experience with mouse model of intestinal inflammation and PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder).
  • Experience with mouse behavioral assays.
  • Experience with RNAseq and bioinformatics analysis.
  • Experience with biobank and registry procedures.

Compensation Statement: The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.

Pay Range: $24.71 - $35.82
Minimum: $24.71
Midpoint: $30.29
Maximum: $35.82
