Position Overview

The University of Victoria invites applications for a Research Chair in Transgender Studies, a prestigious academic position at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will join either the Department of Sociology in Social Sciences or a department in Humanities, depending on their disciplinary background and research focus.

The ideal candidate is a visionary scholar/activist who will catalyze transformative change in Transgender Studies through groundbreaking research, training of the next generation of scholars, innovative pedagogical approaches, successful fundraising, and impactful community partnerships. We seek an internationally recognized leader whose research agenda and community involvement will push boundaries and generate new knowledge. The role involves engaging with the University of Victoria Libraries' Transgender Archives for pioneering scholarship.

Salary Range

The salary ranges from $124,000 - $152,000 at the Associate Professor rank or $174,000 - $215,000 at the Professor rank, based on qualifications, experience, and market demand. Includes a generous benefits package, eligible leaves, and pension plan.

Key Responsibilities

• Research and Scholarship: Maintain an active research program in Transgender Studies, conduct cutting-edge research, pursue external funding, and collaborate internationally.
• Teaching and Mentorship: Teach courses, supervise graduate students, mentor scholars, and develop innovative pedagogical approaches centered on transgender experiences.
• Community Engagement: Build relationships with transgender communities, translate research for community audiences, and participate in advocacy initiatives.
• Transgender Archives Engagement: Collaborate with University Libraries to enhance research, teaching, and programming using the Transgender Archives, and assist in soliciting donations.
• Service and Leadership: Provide leadership in Transgender Studies initiatives, participate in university service, and engage with media and organizations.

Qualifications

• Required: Ph.D. in Sociology or relevant Humanities discipline; demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship, and community engagement; strong publication record; evidence of teaching effectiveness; grant funding success; and commitment to equity and inclusion.
• Preferred: Experience with archival projects, digital humanities, securing donor funding, organizing conferences, multilingual capabilities, and knowledge of Canadian contexts.
