We’re looking for a talented Metals Research Chemist to join our Analytical Chemistry team in Lancaster, part of our internationally recognised Environmental Pressures and Responses Group. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to science that genuinely matters, helping us understand how pollution, land-use change and climate pressures are shaping ecosystems.
We are looking for a motivated analytical chemist with strong expertise in inorganic analysis, in particular metal analysis, who is driven by scientific excellence and real-world impact. In this role, you will collaborate widely across UKCEH and the broader scientific community, helping to shape innovative research ideas and secure funding.
We are particularly interested in chemists who enjoy developing research ideas, building partnerships, writing grant applications, and seeking funding opportunities. If you are enthusiastic about advancing analytical methodologies while generating income and impact, we would love to hear from you.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading the development and validation of analytical methods, including producing robust Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Generating income through grant applications, bids and tender responses
- Contributing to, and leading where appropriate, high-impact scientific outputs (publications, reports, presentations)
- Ensuring the quality and integrity of analytical data, including oversight of data generation
- Training, mentoring and supervising laboratory staff, supporting a high-performance team culture
- Managing laboratory operations, including health & safety, COSHH compliance and day-to-day lab activities
- Working within ISO 17025 quality systems, including audits and non-conformance investigations
- Liaising with instrument manufacturers and supporting evaluation of new analytical technologies
- Carrying out routine analyses where needed to maintain resilience in lab capability
You’ll be based in our Lancaster laboratories—world-class facilities equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation including ICP-MS, ICP-OES and XRF. The lab holds UKAS ISO 17025:2017 accreditation and Gold LEAF certification, reflecting our commitment to quality, sustainability and innovation.
What we’re looking for
- A PhD in Environmental Chemistry (or related discipline), or an MSc with substantial relevant experience
- Strong expertise in environmental metal analysis, including trace-level work and complex matrices
- Proven experience with ICP-MS, ICP-OES and XRF, including method development and optimisation
- A track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences
- Experience of securing research funding through competitive bids
Above all, you’ll be motivated by impact, keen to apply your expertise to real-world environmental challenges, and to work collaboratively in a team that values integrity, innovation and scientific excellence.
If you’re ready to take the next step in your research career and help deliver science that drives change, we’d love to hear from you.
