Research Engineer (Photonic-Electronic Device Modeling)

Posting Start Date: 27/01/2026

Job Description

Our work investigates the physical coupling between light, 2D material, and oxide at the material and device levels and explores how such coupling enables compact architectures where sensing, memory, and computing coexist. We seek a research engineer with strong foundation in device physics and computational modeling to contribute to simulation, characterization, and system-level performance evaluation.
As a key member of the research team, the candidate will participate in multi-scale modeling and experimental-design feedback loops that connect first-principles physical phenomena to system-level and application-level performance metrics. The position provides an opportunity to contribute to fundamental discoveries in anisotropic optoelectronics and to shape future technology platforms for efficient information processing.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop simulation workflows for anisotropic semiconductor and ferroelectric devices through first-principles, TCAD, and multi-physics modeling.
  • Model anisotropic light-matter interactions and evaluate polarization-sensitive responsivity, memory behavior, and computing capabilities.
  • Integrate material- and device-level experimental data into circuit and system benchmarking frameworks.
  • Participate in the analysis of sensing-memory-computing-in-one architectures and evaluate their functional advantages relative to conventional von Neumann designs.
  • Collaborate closely with materials, device, photonics, and circuit researchers within NUS and with external partners.
  • Contribute to research proposal and manuscript preparation targeted at competitive funding and high-impact journals.

The laboratory provides competitive remuneration and access to advanced device fabrication, characterization, and computational facilities within a highly interdisciplinary research ecosystem. The position is full-time and initially offered on a 12-month contract with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in semiconductor and optoelectronic device physics, with familiarity in anisotropic or low-dimensional material systems considered advantageous.
  • Experience in computational modeling using tools such as QuantumATK, Silvaco TCAD, COMSOL, or FDTD.
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for scientific computing, data analysis, and model development.
  • Strong analytical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and academic writing ability.
  • Capacity to work independently and within multidisciplinary research environments.
