Job Description

This position focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of integrated robotic systems enhanced with modern AI capabilities. The work forms part of a research programme advancing intelligent robotic platforms through the integration of embodied hardware systems with Vision-Language-Action models, enabling robots to perceive, reason, and act in real-world environments. The successful candidate will contribute to the full lifecycle of robotic system development, from mechanical design and simulation to AI integration, teleoperation, and real-world validation in laboratory and field environments.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Design and develop robotic platforms including mechanical structures, actuation systems, sensing modules, and embedded electronics
  • Build and integrate full robotic systems combining hardware, perception, control, and AI model components
  • Implement and integrate Vision-Language-Action models or related embodied AI frameworks for robot perception and decision-making
  • Develop robot control pipelines and interfaces for teleoperation, data collection, and learning-based control
  • Simulate robotic systems using physics-based simulators such as MuJoCo, Gazebo, or similar robotics simulation environments
  • Conduct laboratory testing and system validation of robot prototypes, including sensor calibration, motion testing, and performance evaluation
  • Deploy robotic systems in real-world environments and evaluate system robustness, autonomy, and task performance
  • Analyse experimental results and refine system design through iterative hardware-software co-development
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including robotics engineers, AI researchers, and application-domain specialists

Qualifications

  • Possess at least a bachelor’s degree (B.Eng.) in Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong foundation in robot design, mechatronics, and system integration.
  • Experience with robot simulation platforms such as MuJoCo, Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or equivalent physics engines.
  • Familiarity with robotics software frameworks (e.g., ROS/ROS2, Python, C++).
  • Experience integrating AI or machine learning models with robotic systems is advantageous.
  • Prior exposure to teleoperation systems, robot learning, or embodied AI is beneficial.
  • Hands-on experience with robot prototyping, sensors, and embedded control systems is preferred.
  • Ability to conduct experimental evaluation and real-world robot testing.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary robotics research environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Open to fixed-term contract.
