Research Fellow (AI Law, Sustainability and Public International Law)
Job Description
The Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore is a leading research centre dedicated to legal and interdisciplinary scholarship in international law. The Centre seeks to strengthen Singapore and Asia’s role in shaping, developing, and promoting international law, and aspires to be a regional intellectual hub and thought leader in international legal research and teaching.
CIL is expanding its research and invites applications for a one-year Research Fellow position in public international law, with a strong research interest in AI governance and sustainability. This position supports CIL’s growing research agenda in AI law, climate and environmental sustainability, and digital governance. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative research environment at the intersection of artificial intelligence, sustainability, and international law.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct high-quality, independent and collaborative research on the intersection of AI and digital technologies, international law, and sustainability.
- Publish at least one scholarly article in a reputable journal during the period of appointment.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of CIL’s research agenda on AI, technology and sustainability.
- Assist in preparation of research proposals related to AI governance, climate change and sustainability.
- Support the organisation of academic seminars and conferences, and present research findings at academic seminars and similar fora.
- Monitor, analyse and report on developments in international law relating to AI, emerging technologies and sustainability.
- Support CIL’s engagement in regional and global AI and technology law initiatives and forums.
- Contribute to CIL’s broader research projects, events and institutional initiatives.
- Reside in Singapore throughout the duration of the appointment, in accordance with NUS policies on residence and leave.

Qualifications
- A PhD in public international law, with a focus on AI governance and/or sustainability, climate change or environmental governance.
- A demonstrated scholarly interest in AI and technology law, with a clear interest in sustainability or climate and environmental issues in international law.
- Proven research and writing abilities, evidenced by publications and/or high-quality doctoral thesis.
- Strong analytical skills for AI, sustainability, and international legal frameworks.
- The ability to work independently, manage multiple research tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and organisational skills, as well as proficiency in IT tools for research and collaboration.
