Salary:
Full time starting salary is normally in the range £36,636 to £46,049, with potential progression once in post to £48,822
As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is £42,254.
Hours: Full Time or Part Time

The University of Birmingham welcomes applications for a Research Fellow in the Department of Applied Health Sciences. The postholder will work on a qualitative study exploring the diagnostic pathways of Black African and Black Caribbean women with symptomatic breast cancer. Working with NHS partners, they will recruit women for interviews, conduct interviews and analyse qualitative data. They will also conduct literature reviews on the topic.
Main duties
The successful applicant will
- Work closely with the Principal Investigator to undertake research on diagnostic pathways to breast cancer
- Play a key role in collecting and analysing data and writing project outputs
- Conduct desk research related to the project
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
- Undertake management/administration arising from research
Person spec
The successful applicant must have:
- First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area
- Demonstrable experience in qualitative research, including interviewing patients
- Experience of qualitative data analysis using NVivo software
- High level analytical capability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
- Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
Desirable specifications:
- Experience of working with women from minority ethnic groups
- Experience in recruiting and interviewing patients in the NHS
- Experience in conducting interviews on sensitive topics
- Experience in conducting systematic reviews
