Job Description

We are seeking a full-time Research Fellow (Architectural Acoustics) for a 12-month appointment, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and project progress.

This project investigates the mechanisms of inter-floor noise transmission in Singapore and develops advanced and novel solutions for noise control. The Research Fellow will take a leading role in the applied, measurement-facing aspects of the project, working closely with team members specializing in theoretical acoustics and numerical modelling.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and executing field measurement campaigns in building units, including impact sound insulation measurements in accordance with ISO / ASTM standards;
  • Operating and maintaining acoustic instrumentation, such as sound intensity mapping system and beamforming / acoustic imaging equipment;
  • Coordinating site access and logistics for field measurements with funding agencies and project stakeholders;
  • Assisting in the acoustic characterization and laboratory testing of novel noise-control samples developed by the team;
  • Providing building acoustics expertise to guide the material development team on application requirements, performance targets, and practical installation constraints;
  • Supporting small-scale on-site installation and testing of prototype noise control;
  • Preparing technical reports, conference papers, and journal manuscripts.

Qualifications

Professional requirements:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Architecture, Architectural Acoustics, Building Acoustics, or a closely related discipline;
  • Strong foundation in building science and construction knowledge, with an understanding of floor and slab construction typologies;
  • Demonstrated expertise in room acoustics and building acoustics measurement, including sound insulation and impact noise testing;
  • Familiarity with relevant international standards for impact sound insulation measurement (ISO 10140-3, ISO 717-2, ASTM E1007, or equivalent); experience in applying these standards in laboratory and/or field settings is highly desirable;
  • Hands-on experience with acoustic instrumentation and field measurement; experience with sound intensity mapping or scanning systems is an advantage;
  • Experience or interest in acoustic material characterization and/or noise control applications in buildings.

Other general requirements:

  • Ability to undertake high-quality applied research with a degree of independent initiative;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; a track record of publications relative to career stage;
  • Ability to work collaboratively across an interdisciplinary team spanning acoustics, architecture, and physical science;
  • Willingness to conduct field work in occupied residential buildings and construction environments.
