About us
The mission of the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. About the role
The appointee will join our skin group at UCL GOS Institute of Child Health and will work closely with the Section of Virology, at University of Surrey to develop the topical gene editing therapy using engineered virus-like particles (VLPs). You will need to construct vectors and design gene editing strategies to correct mutations in patient cells. You will also pack and produce VLPs and test the efficiency of transduction in cells using the VLPs. If time permits, you will be involved in a small in vivo study to evaluate the feasibility of topical application using the VLPs. This post is funded for 10 to 12 months in the first instance on salary £44,480 pa (full-time) or Pro-rata for part-time.
About you
Applicants should have a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology or related fields. Experience in cell and molecular biology are essential and techniques in subcloning, plasmid preparation, gene and protein expression and cell culture are required. The candidate must have the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and be also able to work independently and effectively with appropriate supervision. A track record based on publications and presentations is desirable.
