Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Research Fellow to join our Department of Mechanical and Product Design Engineering at Swinburne University to conduct research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), natural language processing, computer vision, and related methods for data analytics, human–machine interaction and decision support.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with researchers at Swinburne University, other universities and research institutions, and industry partners to design and develop software solutions that leverage AI technologies to address complex real-world problems.
We are seeking candidates who can work with a high degree of autonomy and are able to demonstrate initiative and responsibility in achieving the research goals under the leadership of the Chief Investigators of the project.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and applying advanced AI methodologies, including LLMs, computer vision, and multimodal vision-language systems for real-world decision-support applications.
- Strong capability in simulation, agent-based modelling, and statistical or computational modelling for complex, dynamic systems, including human–AI collaboration frameworks and autonomous agent design.
- Experience in fine-tuning, training, and deploying transformer-based AI systems; implementing domain adaptation, few-shot learning, and multimodal reasoning techniques across heterogeneous environments.
- Proficiency in Python and machine learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face), with demonstrated experience in software development, user-focused tool creation, and interface or pipeline implementation for AI-driven applications.
- Proven track record of high-quality research outputs, including publications in AI or related areas, demonstrating the ability to drive impactful academic contributions.
Qualifications
- A PhD in Engineering or Information and Communication Technology, or equivalent qualification.
