Research Fellow - Large Vision-Language Models
Based at Australian Institute Machine Learning (AMIL), City East Campus
Full-time, fixed term contract 3 years
Salary Range: $102,024 - $109,307 per annum (plus 17% superannuation)

Join a funded research project at the forefront of Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs), developing innovative evaluation tools and training methods to enhance complex reasoning, decision-making, and adaptability in next-generation AI systems. The team
Reporting to Associate Professor Qi Wu, this role sits within the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML). You will work alongside experts in machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, contributing to cutting-edge research and partnering with academic and industry stakeholders to deliver innovative, high-impact outcomes.
Established in 2018 and based at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide, AIML is globally recognised for research excellence and real‑world impact, collaborating with leading industry and government partners to apply cutting‑edge discoveries to challenges in sectors such as defence, space, healthcare, infrastructure and agritech.

Experience
To join our community and thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience:
- PhD in machine learning, AI, computer science or related field
- Programming experience in Python, C++ or other relevant language and experience in deep neural networks (Pytorch, tensorflow).
- Experience and demonstrable expert knowledge in one or more or the following areas: deep learning; graph neural networks and/or probabilistic graphical models; computer vision; Large Language Models.
- A good publication record in top tier machine learning and/or computer vision conferences or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity.
- A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team
