Job Description:

About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow (Level B) or Senior Research Fellow (Level C) to join the First Nations Cancer and Wellbeing Research (FNCWR) Program, led by Professor Gail Garvey within the School of Public Health, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences.

The FNCWR Program leads diverse and innovative research focused on achieving equity in cancer outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the cancer continuum, as well as enhancing wellbeing across the life course. Our vision is innovative, community-driven research that supports and empowers Australia’s First Nations peoples and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

We are seeking a highly motivated, research-focused academic to contribute to and extend our existing research program. The successful applicant will have capacity to pursue new research directions, contribute to competitive funding submissions, enhance scholarly outputs, and build the capability of junior staff and students.

At both levels, the role includes research leadership, supervision, service, and engagement activities aligned with University values and priorities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct and contribute to high-quality, impactful research aligned with FNCWR priorities.
  • Publish in leading peer-reviewed outlets and contribute to competitive funding applications and grant management.
  • Support supervision of Honours and HDR students and contribute to researcher development.
  • Contribute to internal service and build productive external partnerships.

At Level C, the appointee will provide research leadership, including leading major funding applications as Chief Investigator, initiating and coordinating strategic collaborations, supervising HDR students as Principal Supervisor, managing staff performance and development, and demonstrating sustained leadership in service and external engagement.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

About You

  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant health-related discipline.
  • Research expertise in epidemiology and/or quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods approaches.
  • Demonstrated research productivity through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
  • Evidence of contribution to competitive research funding applications.
  • Experience supervising or co-supervising research students.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.

At Level C, you will demonstrate national recognition in your field, a strong track record of securing and managing competitive research funding, successful HDR supervision to completion, and demonstrated leadership in service and external engagement activities.
