Posting Start Date: 15/12/2025

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join our research programme on light-driven microrobots for biomedical applications. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, characterization, and control of miniature robotic systems powered by optical or hybrid actuation mechanisms. The Research Fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator to advance scientific understanding of microrobotic propulsion, interaction with biological environments, and their potential use in targeted delivery, imaging, and therapeutic functions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and development of light-driven or hybrid microrobotic systems.
  • Fabrication and micro-/nano-structuring of functional materials relevant to microrobotic actuation.
  • Conducting experiments to characterize robot locomotion, propulsion efficiency, material response, and system performance.
  • Development and optimization of optical, magnetic, or multi-modal control strategies.
  • Execution of in vitro and ex vivo evaluations to assess microrobot behaviour in physiologically relevant environments.
  • Data analysis, scientific documentation, and preparation of manuscripts, reports, and conference presentations.
  • Supervision or co-supervision of undergraduate or graduate student researchers involved in related projects.
  • Contribution to lab management, equipment maintenance, and development of new experimental capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Possess a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong research background in microrobotics, micro/nanoscale fabrication, light-driven systems, soft robotics, or related areas.
  • Hands-on experience with optical actuation, microfabrication techniques, soft material synthesis, or micro-/nanoparticle manipulation is highly preferred.
  • Experience in experimental design, quantitative data analysis, and laboratory-based research.
  • A strong publication record demonstrating expertise in relevant research domains.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to prepare high-quality scientific manuscripts and presentations.
  • Open to a full-time fixed-term appointment.
