Frequently Asked Questions

🎓What qualifications do I need for this Research Fellow role?

A PhD degree in a relevant area is essential — for example Chemical Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or Systems Engineering. You also need strong mathematical, modeling, programming, and scientific writing skills. Prior experience in at least one focus area is expected, such as chemical process modeling, TEA/LCA, or control theory. For context on research fellow pathways, see what is a Research Fellow and postdoctoral success tips.

🔬What research areas will I work on?

The role sits at the intersection of machine learning and chemical engineering. You will help develop machine learning models and control systems for chemical and optimization problems. Priority areas include chemical process modeling for electrochemical surface engineering and pharmaceutical crystallization, techno-economic analysis (TEA), life-cycle assessment (LCA), and control theory with MPC and reinforcement learning. For broader machine learning context, see Andrew Ng's machine learning course.

📝How do I apply for this Research Fellow position?

Use the Apply now link in the job description to submit your application through the NUS talent community. Prepare a curriculum vitae and supporting documents that highlight your machine learning, chemical process modeling, and programming experience. The listed application deadline is 30 October 2026. For help, review how to write a winning academic CV.

💻Which technical skills and software should I be proficient in?

Strong programming and modeling skills are essential. Experience with tools such as Aspen, COMSOL, and CFD is highly relevant for chemical process modeling. For control systems, familiarity with nonlinear systems, model predictive control (MPC), reinforcement learning, and stability analysis is valued. You may also need dynamic/data-driven modeling and optimization expertise. For Python-based machine learning, see scikit-learn machine learning in Python.

🌏Is this role based at NUS and what is the work location?

The position is based at Kent Ridge Campus of the National University of Singapore and is linked to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE). The job description does not list remote work, so applicants should expect an on-campus research role. For confidence before applying, see Research Fellow interview questions and tips.

⏳What is the application deadline for this role?

The listed application deadline is 30 October 2026. Because academic roles can close early or review on a rolling basis, submit your CV and materials as soon as possible through the NUS talent community.
