The National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research (INIAV, I.P.) hereby announces the opening of a call for one Research Fellowship for Bachelor’s degree holders (BI), within the scope of the project HoneySafe: Mel Seguro – Rastreabilidade e Inovação na Garantia da Qualidade Apícola, COMPETE2030-FEDER-00812000, funded by FEDER (85%) and OE (15%), under the following conditions:
1. Type of Fellowship: Research Fellowship for Bachelor’s degree holder (BI)
2. Scientific Area: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or related fields
3. Admission Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or related fields,
- Proof of enrolment in a study cycle leading to a Master’s degree, certificate of completion of the curricular component, or proof of enrolment in a non-degree course, to be presented at the time of contract signature.
4. Preferred Qualifications:
- Enrolment in a Master’s degree in eligible scientific areas;
- Proven laboratory experience in analytical chemistry and food safety;
- Proven laboratory experience in methodologies of liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and method validation;
- Previous experience in research projects;
- Scientific publications or conference communications in areas relevant to the project;
- Good skills of Portuguese and English (written and spoken), certified if not the candidate’s native language;
- Professional rigour, autonomy, and good teamwork skills;
- Driving licence (category B).
5. Work Plan:
Participation in the HoneySafe project: Safe Honey – Traceability and Innovation in Beekeeping Quality Assurance, which aims to identify the most relevant contaminants for the development of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) to create rapid tests that support beekeepers with quality control directly in their apiaries.
The fellowship will support research and development activities related to the detection of contaminants in honey samples from various sources and contribute with dissemination activities. Activities also include laboratory and experimental support, data processing and analysis, and collaboration on the preparation of technical reports, scientific publications, and initiatives to disseminate the project’s results. The tasks will be carried out under the guidance of the INIAV research team.
6. Fellowship Regime and Duration:
The fellowship will be granted on an exclusive dedication basis, with an expected starting date in November 2026, and will have a duration of 16 months.
7. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:
The fellowship is governed by: The Research Fellow Statute (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica) approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October, Law No. 12/2013 of 29 January, Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, and Decree-Law No. 123/2019; Regulation No. 950/2019 of 16 December, which approves the FCT Regulation for Research Fellowships, available at: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento
8. Fellowship Allowance:
According to the FCT fellowship allowance table (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), the monthly stipend is €1.090,98, in accordance with Regulation No. 950/2019 of 16 December. The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
The fellow will benefit from personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, may exercise the right to social security through voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Social Security Contributory Regimes Code.
9. Workplace:
The preferred workplace will be INIAV, I.P. – Vairão Research Unit, located at: Rua dos Lagidos, Lugar da Madalena, 4485-655 Vairão, Vila do Conde, Portugal.
10. Scientific Supervision:
The fellow will be supervised by Dr. Andreia Freitas.
11. Application Submission:
Applications must include the following documents:
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae (dated and signed) – mandatory;
- Motivation letter (dated and signed), addressed to Dr. Andreia Freitas, including the full identification of the candidate and reference to this call No. 34/2026/BI;
- Supporting documents (digital copies) proving the most relevant elements of the CV and academic qualification certificates. Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must hold recognition of the degree in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, in its current wording – mandatory;
- Any additional documents that the applicant considers relevant to the evaluation of their technical and scientific merit.
12. Selection Method and Evaluation Criteria:
The selection method, of an eliminatory nature, will consist of curriculum evaluation and, if deemed necessary by the jury, an interview.
Applications will be evaluated based on the combined assessment of the following criteria (0–10 scale):
QA – Academic qualifications;
EP – Professional training, professional experience, and adequacy of the candidate’s profile;
E – If deemed necessary by the jury, an individual interview will be conducted to assess the adequacy of the candidate’s profile.
The Final Classification (FC) will be calculated according to one of the following formulas:
FC = 0.7 QA + 0.3 EP
or
FC = 0.6 QA + 0.2 EP + 0.2 E
13. Composition of the Selection Committee:
The selection committee will be composed of:

14. Communication of Results:
Based on the final classification, the jury will rank the candidates. The lists of admitted and excluded candidates and the final ranking will be sent by email and posted at the INIAV, I.P. facilities in Vairão.
After the publication of the results, candidates will be considered automatically notified and may request a prior hearing of interested parties within 10 working days from the date of publication. At the end of this period, the selected candidate will be notified in writing regarding the award of the fellowship and the effective start date.
In the event of withdrawal or resignation of the selected candidate, the fellowship will be offered to the next candidate in the ranking, and so on.
