i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by Msc Students, within the project “GlycanShield - Exploring the impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) environmental exposure on gut inflammation and the protective role of glycan supplementation”, ref. 2024.16867.PEX, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.
Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

Project Title: “GlycanShield - Exploring the impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) environmental exposure on gut inflammation and the protective role of glycan supplementation”.
Workplans: Within this project, the fellow will carry out the computational analysis aimed at correlating serum PFAS levels with serum glycome alterations in the preclinical phase of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), years before diagnosis. Predictive models and causal analyses will make it possible to establish an axis linking exposure to these chemicals, serum glycome alterations, and the development of IBD.
Admission Requirements:
Mandatory:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioengineering, or related fields;
- Being enrolled in a Master’s degree study cycle in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related area, or an honor statement of capacity to enroll in the aforementioned study cycle, until the grant is contracted;
- Knowledge of computational methods, namely FASTQ data processing and QC, and analysis of predictive models;
- Solid knowledge of programming languages, such as Python and R.
Preferential: Experience and solid Knowledgement in the following points:
- Analysis of predictive models and machine learning applied to biological data (feature selection, cross-validation, performance evaluation);
- Statistical analysis and biostatistics (multivariate models, mixed-effects models);
- Integration of multi-omics data with clinical/exposure variables;
- Familiarity with public data repositories (GEO, ENA/SRA);
- Proficiency on scientific English (written and spoken) and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.
Place: The work will be carried out at i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Inês Alves.
Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 6 months, eventually renewable and the expected starting date is November 1st, 2026, upon availability of the financed funds.
Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.090,98, according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf). The payments will be made by bank transference. Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10.
Evaluation Criteria:
Selection will be carried out through curricular evaluation (70%), taking into account previous experience in the points described in the Admission Requirements, and an interview (30%). Candidates will be assessed (on a scale of 1 to 100) and then ranked based on the scores obtained in the criteria defined above. The three best-ranked candidates will be called for an interview.
