A tender is hereby opened for a Research Grant ref BI_3_2026_FCT2023.18178.IC&DT/LISBOA2030-FEDER 0092240014722, within the scope of the “SignPain” Project – Operation nº 14722, ref.ª LISBOA2023-FEDER-00922400, FCT, Balcão dos Fundos, Lisbon2023-FEDER. The grant will be funded by national funds from FCT/MECI, and Lisbon2023-FEDER funds (COMPETE 2030).

Summary: A call for application is open for 1 (one) Research Grant within the scope of the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL), R&D institution University Research Center in Psychology-CUIP, (CUIP/UAL), the project reference BI_3_2026_FCT2023.18178.IC&DT/LISBOA2030-FEDER 0092240014722. The grant is financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), and the Lisbon2023-FEDER fund, refª LISBOA2030-FEDER 00922400, nº 14722, under the following conditions:

Workplan: Develop scientific activities within the scope of the project: SignPain – Facilitating communication about pain between deaf patients and healthcare professionals through a digital intervention. Work tasks include collecting and analysing data using qualitative and quantitative methodologies; preparing content for the development of the SignPain app/digital platform; conducting a pilot study to test SignPain and its impact; and disseminating project results.
Aims to achieve: Conduct comprehensive literature/theoretical reviews to inform the project rationale, collect and analyse data using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies; develop and prepare content for the SignPain app/digital platform; conduct a pilot study to evaluate the usability and impact of SignPain on pain communication; disseminate the project's findings through scientific publications, presentations, and other outreach activities.

Workplace: The research tasks will be developed at the premises of the University Research Center in Psychology - CUIP, at Autonomous University of Lisbon, Rua de Santa Marta, 47, 4º, 1150--293, Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Professor Catarina Tomé Pires, PI (Principal Investigator) of the SignPain project.
Duration: The grant will last for 12 months, starting on october 2026, and may be renewed up to a maximum of 12 months, for the duration of the project, subject to annual review for a maximum period of two years, and in accordance with the provisions of the Research Scholarship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. A reserve selection list will be required. CEU reserves the right to call on unsuccessful candidates, in rank order, to recruit the additional Fellow required for the same project within 12 months of the final ranking list being announced.

Mandatory admission requirements: a) applicants must hold a master’s degree in Social Sciences or a related field; b) be enrolled in a doctoral program; c) or hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree and be enrolled in a program that does not confer an academic degree integrated into the educational program of a higher education institution, developed in partnership or collaboration with one or more R&D units; d) not have previously received any other research grant funded directly or indirectly by the FCT, regardless of its duration.
Eligibility of candidates: candidates must fulfil the eligibility conditions set out in Articles 7 and 9 of the FCT I.P. Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships (Reg. nr.950/2019).
Specific Requirements
Preferential factors/skills:
- Scientific knowledge and mastery of qualitative and quantitative techniques/methodologies
- Experience in co-design and participative approaches
- Experience in collecting and analysing qualitative and quantitative data using software such as, for example, MAXQDA, SPSS or R.
- Publication of scientific articles.
- Fluency in English for publication and international collaboration.
- Fluency in Portugues for data collection and analysis
- Flexibility and ability to work autonomously and in a multidisciplinary team in the development of scientific activities.

Benefits
Monthly maintenance allowance: The value of the grant is €1,359,64 according to the scale of grants awarded directly by the FCT, https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.pdf and in accordance with the draft contract. The candidate may also be reimbursed the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Insurance, if he or she opts in. The grants will be paid monthly by bank transfer by the contracting organisation.
Eligibility criteria
Exclusive regime: The performance of tasks as a grant holder is carried out on an exclusive basis, under the terms of article 5 of the Research Grant Holder's Statute and the Research Grant Regulations.
Eligibility of candidates: candidates must fulfil the eligibility conditions set out in Articles 7 and 9 of the FCT I.P. Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships (Reg. nr.950/2019).
Selection process
Selection criteria and methods: Only the three candidates who meet the admission requirements and show the best results in the preferential factors will be considered for interview. Candidates will be assessed according to the following weightings: curriculum evaluation (50%), interview (30%) and motivation letter (20%).

Announcement/notification of the results: The results will be made public within 60 working days of the deadline for submitting applications. Candidates selected and admitted for interview will be notified by email.
