Offer Description
A call is open for the award of 1 (one) Research Grant for a Bachelor's degree holder under the EU RAIL FP3-IAM4RAIL2 Project (Ref. 101324772 | FP3-IAM4RAIL2), co-funded by the European Union through the Europe's Rail Programme, under the following conditions:
1. SCIENTIFIC AREA
Electrical and Computer Engineering
2. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates may apply for this call if they cumulatively meet the following requirements:
Requirement 1: hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Note: If the qualification was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, and any formalities established therein must be completed by the date of hiring.
Requirement 2: be enrolled in a Master's degree course in Electrical and Computer Engineering, specialization in Autonomous Systems.
Requirement 3: have proven academic experience in implementing hardware and algorithms in Python and ROS2, and in developing communication and data storage frameworks within digital twins applied to railway bridges.
3. DURATION
The grant will have a duration of 6 months, with an expected start date of 1 January 2027, and may be renewed in accordance with the project objectives and budget, up to the limit established by law. The grant will be carried out on an exclusive basis, in accordance with the regulations governing advanced training of human resources of the Foundation for Science and Technology and ISEP, or until the end of the project, whichever occurs first.
4. ACTIVITY OBJECT / WORK PLAN
The work to be carried out is part of the EU RAIL FP3-IAM4RAIL2 project, which aims to develop and implement innovative solutions for assessing the structural condition of railway bridges. In particular, the work plan includes the following activities:
- Monitor an existing railway bridge in Portugal, based on a permanent system comprising vibration sensors installed on the deck, combined with remote inspection technologies to assess the condition of the bridge and detect anomalies in critical components;
- Develop and implement machine learning strategies based on structural monitoring time series for the automatic identification of early damage, and computer vision methods using images from remote inspections for the automatic classification of multiple anomalies.
5. APPLICABLE LEGISLATION AND REGULATIONS
Research Grant Holder Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August; Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, approved by Regulation No. 950/2019, published in the 2nd series, Part C, of the Diário da República, of 16 December 2019; ISEP Research Grant Regulations; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, published in Diário da República No. 157/2018, Series I, of 16 August, approving the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; and Decree-Law No. 60/2018 of 3 August, simplifying the administrative procedures required for research and development activities, all in their current versions.
6. SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION AND PLACE OF WORK
The work will be carried out at ISEP under the scientific supervision of Professor André Miguel Pinheiro Dias and Diogo Rodrigo Ferreira Ribeiro.
7. MONTHLY MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE
Monthly grant amount: €1,090.98, paid by bank transfer (according to the monthly maintenance allowance values applicable to FCT grants for 2026: https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf), supported through PAD No. C73277.
8. SELECTION METHODS AND JURY COMPOSITION
The selection methods to be used will be curriculum evaluation and interview, weighted at 50% and 50%, respectively, both graded on a scale from 0 to 20 points.
The curriculum evaluation will be carried out considering the following factors, with the corresponding weightings:
- Academic qualifications – 35%
- Scientific experience in implementing ROS2 frameworks – 30%
- Scientific experience in implementing communication and data storage frameworks in digital twins of railway bridges – 35%
The interview will be evaluated according to the following factors:
- Motivation for the application – 50%
- Perception of the relevance of monitoring and inspection within the scope of Railway Engineering – 50%
The jury responsible for the selection process will consist of:

9. APPLICATION SUBMISSION METHOD
Applications must be submitted by email to drr@isep.ipp.pt, with the following documents attached:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Motivation letter;
- Academic qualification certificate / document proving possession of the academic degree and diploma, including the respective recognition when awarded by foreign higher education institutions, or a document proving that recognition has been requested;
- Proof of enrolment in a degree-awarding study cycle;
- Other documents considered relevant by the candidate.
To ensure that all documents can be read, the preferred file format is Portable Document Format (.pdf).
10. APPLICATION DEADLINE
Applications will be accepted from 30 September to 14 October 2026.
11. PUBLICATION / NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS
The results of the evaluation will be communicated by email to the email address indicated in the application.
12. COMPLAINT AND APPEAL PROCEDURES
If the result is unfavorable, candidates have 10 working days after publication of the application evaluation results to submit, if they so wish, their comments during the prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms provided for in the Administrative Procedure Code.
An administrative appeal against the final decision referred to in the preceding paragraphs may be lodged with the Director of ISEP within 15 working days of notification thereof.
13. SELECTION RESERVE (OPTIONAL)
ISEP reserves the right to call upon non-selected candidates, in order of ranking, to hire a grant holder under the same project in the event that the initially selected candidate withdraws.
