A tender is hereby opened for the award of 1 Research Grant(s) (RG) under ProAqua+ Development of Multifunctional Materials for Biofilters in Aquaculture: Establishing New Standards of Quality and Sustainability (Desenvolvimento de materiais multifuncionais para biofiltros em aquacultura: estabelecendo novos padrões de qualidade e sustentabilidade, CENTRO2030-FEDER-02594500 of Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar (CESAM), under the following conditions:
- Scientific Area: Aquaculture, Engineering and Technology.
- Financing Source CENTRO 2030.
- Admission Requirements:

3.2. 1. Study Area: Engineering Biology, Biotechnology, Materials Science and Engineering, and Environmental Science. - Other Requirements: Knowledge and experience relevant to the scope of the project will be valued, particularly in aquaculture systems, with a specific focus on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), biofiltration, and water quality. Experience in the development, production, and characterization of functional polymeric materials, as well as in experimental methodologies for assessing biofilter performance and analysing microbial communities, will also be valued. Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, environmental microbiology, data analysis and/or bioinformatics, as well as experience in multidisciplinary laboratory work, will be considered an advantage. The ability to integrate knowledge from different scientific and technological fields, together with strong communication, teamwork, and stakeholder engagement skills, will also be valued. Finally, an interest in technological innovation and the valorisation of R&D results, combined with an awareness of regulatory, environmental, economic, and sustainability issues, will also be considered an asset.
- Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they comply with paragraph a) of no.1 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute in the wording given by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, and also the provisions of article 9 of the Scientific Research Grant Regulations of the University of Aveiro.
- Work plan: The work plan aims to develop and validate multifunctional polymeric materials for biofiltration in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Prototypes incorporating bioactive compounds will be produced and tested, and their performance in biofilm formation, removal of nitrogen compounds, and improvement of water quality will be assessed. The work will also include mapping regulatory requirements and barriers, developing a regulatory sandbox proposal for aquaculture technologies, and conducting a techno-economic assessment.
- Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellow Statute, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of August 28th; Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, Regulation No. 292/2020, published in Diário da República No. 61, Series II, of March 26th; Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).
- Workplace: The work will be carried out at Department of Biology / Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM); Department of Mechanical Engineering / Centre for Mechanical Technology and Automation (TEMA); and Department of Economics, Industrial Engineering, Management and Tourism / Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (GOVCOPP). of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Professor/Doctor Dr Newton Carlos Marcial Gomes, Dr Pedro Alexandre Almeida Nunes, and Dr Miguel Lopes Batista Viegas.
- Duration of the grant(s): The grant duration will be 12 months, with an expected start date of December 2026, and may be renewed, up to the maximum limit of approved funding. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in nos. 5 and 6 of article 9, of Regulation no. 292/2020, of February 28th, published in Diário da República, no. 61, Series II, of March 26th (Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro).
- Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1.309,64, according to the table of values of monthly maintenance allowances, set out in Appendix III of the Scientific Research Grant Regulation of the University of Aveiro, subject to any updates that may occur and are applicable. The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan. The candidate will additionally receive a tuition-fee complement for the doctoral program, as established in Rectoral Order No. 58-REIT/2022 of the University of Aveiro, which will be supported by the University of Aveiro’s own funds
- Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be the following: Curricular evaluation that will be conducted with the following weighting: A. Weighted average of academic degrees obtained to date and B. Proven research experience in the scientific area of the application with the respective value of 60% and 40%. If necessary, the three highest scoring candidates may be invited for an interview, during which communication skills and knowledge acquired through previous work will be assessed. In the event of an interview, parameters A + B will account for 60% of the final evaluation, while parameter C (interview) will account for 40%. If none of the candidates demonstrate a profile suitable for the nature of the tasks to be performed and for their successful execution, the Selection Jury reserves the right not to award the fellowship to any of the applicants.
- Composition of the Selection Jury: Dr Newton Carlos Marcial Gomes, Principal Researcher with Habilitation at the University of Aveiro; Full Members: Dr Pedro Alexandre Almeida Nunes, Adjunct Professor at the University of Aveiro; and Dr Miguel Lopes Batista Viegas, Assistant Professor at the University of Aveiro. The following have also been designated as alternate members: Vanessa Jesus de Oliveira, PhD, Doctorate Researcher at the University of Aveiro; António Miguel de Oliveira Louvado, PhD, Doctorate Researcher at the University of Aveiro.
- Deadline for applications (not be less than 10 working days) and how to submit applications: The call is open from 07 09-2026 to 18-09-2026, and only applications submitted within the deadline will be admitted. Applications must be formalized by sending a letter of application accompanied by the following documents: Motivation letter, Curriculum Vitae, academic qualifications certificate, declaration of honour (statement of commitment), and other relevant supporting documents. They shall also indicate the e-mail address to which by such indication they accept to be notified for all purposes within this procedure. - Form of publication/notification of results: The results of the evaluation shall be made public no later than 60 working days after the closing date for submission of applications and shall be notified to the applicants. The candidates are informed, in a prior hearing, under the terms established in the Code of Administrative Procedure, of the probable meaning of the final decision, and may, within 10 working days of this notification, express their opinion on this decision. The final results may be appealed to the Rector, to be submitted within 10 working days from the respective notification.
- Tender duration: The final ranking list of candidates will be valid until 30-10-2026 for the purpose of constituting a reserve list for selection.
