CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR THREE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

A call for tenders is now open for the attribution of three Research Scholarship within the scope of the Project “PhD in Management” financed by the Católica Porto School of Business and Economics, under the following conditions, set out below.

Admission requirements:
General requirements:
Candidates for the research grant must, at the date of application, be applicants to or enrolled in the doctoral programme in Management at Católica Porto School of Business and Economics.
Specific requirements:
Candidates must also have knowledge/research experience in the following areas:
- A Master’s degree in Management, Economics, or a related field with a final grade of 16 or higher.
- Proficiency in English.
- A comprehensive academic background relevant to pursuing doctoral studies.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Factors:
Will be considered preferred factors:
- Scientific experience in the aforementioned scientific fields, demonstrated through participation in and presentations at scientific events, the quality of the master’s thesis, and any publications.
Work Plan:
The candidate will work under the supervision of a supervisor. The researcher’s main duties are:
- To conduct research that supports ongoing projects at Católica Porto School of Business and Economics in the fields of economics, finance, and management.
- Collect, process, and perform econometric analysis of data relevant to the research.
- Contribute to the preparation of research reports, working papers, and academic publications for leading international journals.
- Participate in research seminars, meetings, and workshops, demonstrating active engagement with faculty and colleagues.
Additionally, as a PhD student at Católica Porto School of Business and Economics, the selected candidate must:
- Complete the coursework within the first 12 months, covering topics in economics, finance, management, and quantitative methods.
- Undertake a research visit to an international partner institution with expertise in the candidate’s research area, to strengthen international collaboration and academic exposure.
- Prepare and defend a doctoral dissertation ideally consisting of three articles suitable for submission to international peer-reviewed journals.

Scientific Supervision and Host Institution:
The work will be developed at CEGE – Research Centre in Management and Economics integrated into the Católica Porto School of Business and Economics under the scientific coordination of the PhD supervisor formally designated upon the awarding of the fellowship.
Duration of the scholarship:
The research grants to be awarded, under an exclusive dedication regime, will have an initial duration of 12 months, with an expected start date of October 15, 2026. Any renewals may not exceed the maximum duration limit for this type of research grant (48 months).
Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The amount of the scholarship corresponds to 1359,64 € according to the research scholarship values awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf) and will be paid by bank transfer.
Selection methods:
The selection methods to be used are as follows: i) curriculum evaluation (50%); ii) prior experience (motivation letter and work plan – 50%). If necessary, the top 3 ranked candidates may be interviewed; in this case, the weighting will be: curriculum evaluation (50%), ii) prior experience (20%), and selection interview (30%).
Only candidates with a final score of 80 points or higher, on a scale of 0 to 100, will be selected for this position.
Applications that do not meet the admission requirements, are submitted after the deadline, or are incomplete will be considered ineligible.
Composition of the Selection Jury: President of the Jury: Maria Conceição Silva, Effective Members: Nuno Martins and Susana Costa e Silva. Substitute Jury: Božidar Vlačić.
From advertising/notification of results: The jury deliberates in accordance with the selection criteria adopted and disclosed. The jury meetings minutes will contain a summary of the meeting content. After completing the application of the selection criteria, the jury proceeds with the elaboration of the ordered list, with the ranking of the approved candidates. The ranking list of eligible candidates will be published on the premises of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Porto, located at Rua de Diogo Botelho, 1327, 4169-005 Porto - Portugal, with each candidate being notified of his/her position on the list ranking of candidates via email. Ineligible applicants will be notified by email, with details of the missing eligibility elements.
Complaint and appeal procedures: Candidates have a period of ten working days, after the disclosure referred to in the previous number, to give their opinion at a prior hearing.
Deadline for acceptance of the scholarship: Within ten working days following notification of the grant award, the selected candidate must confirm in writing his/her availability to start the scholarship on the proposed date. Failing to do so or not having availability, the candidate placed in the next position will be called.
Application deadline and form of submission:
Candidates submit their application from September 8, 2026 until September 22, 2026. (until 5 pm, Lisbon time).

It will be necessary to submit the following documents:
- Motivation letter including a study plan and career goals in terms of research;
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae (should contain all the elements to assess the admission requirements, including language knowledge and research experience);
- Copy of the academic degree certificate(s) as requested in the call for applications, preferably including final grades;
- Proof of application or enrollment in the doctoral program in Management at the Católica Porto School of Business and Economics, under the terms already described in this call for applications.
Only applications received during the opening period of the above-mentioned call shall be considered. Candidates who incorrectly formalize their application or who do not prove the requirements of this call are excluded. False statements made by applicants will be punished under the law.
Research grants contracting conditions
The signing of the research grant contract is strictly dependent on the submission and compliance of the following documents:
- Valid Visa / Residence Permit or residence title in national territory, applicable under the legislation in force for foreign citizens;
- Registration of Recognition of Foreign Academic Degrees
In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, the presentation of the registration of recognition of the respective degree is mandatory, in compliance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, in its current wording. - Enrollment in the Doctoral Program in Management at Católica Porto School of Business and Economics, under the terms already described in this call for applications.
The Jury Panel reserves the right to disqualify and exclude the selected applicant who fails to present all the established contracting conditions within 60 days from the date of the formal communication of the final selection results. The intention to disqualify will be notified to the applicant in advance, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure, for the purpose of a prior hearing of interested parties. In the event of actual exclusion, the candidate positioned next on the final ranking list will be called.
