The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a position of a Research infrastructure specialist (veterinary pathologist)

The position is a fixed term position until 31.12.2028, preferably starting full time in the beginning of May 2026. The Finnish Center for Laboratory Animal Pathology, FCLAP, is a core facility service of the University of Helsinki. This position is technically based at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Veterinary Biosciences, veterinary pathology and parasitology, in Viikki campus Helsinki.

FCLAP is a core service providing expertise in veterinary pathology, focusing on laboratory animal pathology, for research groups and external clients. We provide histotechnological services and expertise in morphological methods to assess pathological changes and specific phenotypical features in laboratory/experimental animals. The aim of FCLAP is to provide veterinary pathology expertise for research projects involving animal work and hereby optimize the use of experimental animals in research.

FCLAP is one of the HiLIFE research infrastructures and belongs to the Histotechnology and Laboratory Animal Pathology platform. FCLAP provides technical services such as trimming, processing and paraffin embedding of tissue specimens, preparation of unstained paraffin and frozen sections, histochemical staining (HE and a range of special stains), immunohistochemistry (including testing of new antibodies), in-situ hybridization, consultation and tutoring on histological tissue processing. Further we provide pathology services regarding assessment of morphological tissue changes, necropsy and tissue sampling, assistance with experimental design and choice of techniques in pathology.

The research infrastructure specialist’s responsibilities include client contact, planning, executing and coordinating projects within the core facility, providing pathology expertise within the projects and financial oversight of the work. The research infrastructure specialist is also involved in training veterinary pathologists. FCLAP works in close connection with the histopathology laboratory, including three technical staff, and the section for veterinary parasitology and pathology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, providing a collegium of around 10 academic colleagues. The research infrastructure specialist is the head of the FCLAP services.

  • readiness to work in a teaching and research environment
  • good cooperation skills and ability to work in joint groups with variable nationalities
  • ability to manage research projects and their finances
  • ability to take administrative tasks and serve as a technical lead who guides the projects

We also highly appreciate

  • a professional specialist degree in veterinary pathology (Diplomate of ECVP or ACVP) and/or a PhD degree
  • knowledge of appropriate laboratory/work safety protocols and quality systems
  • developmental mindset

The position offers the possibility to work as an expert in a wide variety of research projects and studies involving laboratory animals and pathology. The customer relations and streamlining of the procedure can largely be built and mended independently by the appointee. The colleagues at the discipline of pathology and parasitology, including certified veterinary pathologists, researchers and teachers, provide a team for consultation and discussions when needed.

The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities, scale of an expert and support staff (MV9-10), and the monthly gross salary will be about 3 900–4 700 euros depending on the appointee’s experience and merits. The appointment includes a six-month probationary period for new employees.
