Overview

The Research Nurse Coordinator works under the direction of research leadership and Attending Physician for the Long Covid Multidisciplinary Center. This registered nurse is responsible for clinical practice, care coordination, and recruitment for research studies. This may include but is not limited to patient care, education, screening, sample and data collection. Direct patient care requires extensive knowledge of Long COVID pathophysiology, symptoms, treatments, and access to resources. Coordinates, evaluates and educates patients recruited for Long COVID studies. Adheres to all protocols and regulations regarding sample collection, documentation, and adverse events. The Research Nurse Coordinator is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team providing specialty care to Long COVID patients and a liaison and clinical assistant to research teams.

Essential Duties

Professional

Coordinates care as lead member of health care team as it pertains to patient for Long COVID. Initial contact for patients in Long COVID office. Informs patient criteria of clinic, appointment structure. Directs patients to local care if they are outside the service area. Reviews referrals to evaluate symptoms and create a timeline from acute COVID infection to Long COVID to fit criteria of clinic. Support services for office: triage phone messages, fax orders, schedule maintenance, schedule appointments, manage call center.
Locate and screen providers, cultivate relationships with medical supply companies, and compound pharmacies locally and in surrounding states. Maintain and update the vendor list.
Provide direct patient care during outpatient visits. Ensure timeliness and continuum of care throughout multidisciplinary appointments. Assess patients within nursing scope, obtain Long COVID history, AST, measure for medical devices, schedule follow up, provide tailored education for care plan. Liaison for researchers to share information on studies with providers and distribute approved flyers to acquire participants.
Manage In Basket- triage messages, provide education, therapeutic communication, and general medical advice. Create forms, protocols, and education handouts. Run support group with social worker. Supports providers through visits and back office. IE: Faxing orders, preauthorization's, prescription refills, DME requests and documentation

Education

Provides education to patients and families on Long COVID, symptoms, treatments, management and outcomes. Maintain knowledge of recent science-based research for new treatments and advances in management. Educates patients and families on prevention of COVID including masking, vaccines and social adjustments. Educates treatment of outpatient acute COVID including medication, isolation, and non-medication methods. Manage science-based information for dissemination, written, and internet sources for staff. Community outreach- attend events, set up tables, create flyers, and educate community. Participates in professional development to incorporate new advances in treatment and management. Incorporates culturally competent care in care plans to accommodate diverse populations. Provide therapeutic communication to patients and family. Ensure access to resources and support services to facilitate healing and recovery.

Multi-Disciplinary Approach

Coordinates across multiple disciplines to ensure continuity in patient care. Facilitates team approach to implementation of care plans. Leads team meetings weekly to ensure operational efficiency and staff satisfaction. Facilitates and coordinates services, tests and referrals within organization and external organizations, including different states. Ensures participation in research/clinical trials, follows all protocols, regulations and laws. Coordinates with different disciplines to discover emerging research.

Research

Adhere to study protocols, recruit study participants, collect data while ensuring compliance with regulations, laws and protocols. Obtains permission and ensures proper qualification, understanding and documentation of patient participation. Direct patient care which may include sample collection (blood, urine, stool, saliva) ECG, physical assessment. Provide patient education on study and participation. May include medication, dosing, and side effects. Recognize noncompliance, adverse events, and reports to appropriate authorities. Assist researchers in tasks within the scope of nursing practice.

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. Strong clinical skills, experienced in sample collection (blood, urine, stool, saliva) ECG, physical assessment
  2. Demonstrated ability to evaluate subject suitability, coordinate patient enrollment, and obtain informed consent
  3. Excellent communication skills for interacting with study participants
  4. Strong organizational and time management skills

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  1. Master's degree in nursing science
  2. Previous experience in clinical research and familiarity with federal and state regulations
  3. Experience in long COVID

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Evaluates and assesses subject’s suitability for inclusion in studies; develops and modifies procedures according to study findings; recommends changes to the study protocol to coincide with study goals and objectives.
  2. Develops and implements procedures and data quality assurance standards for safety monitoring components of studies.
  3. Contributes to designing activities, policies and procedures to improve day to day efficiency of the recruitment and assessment components of the study and to ensure that staff members perform activities within established research protocol.
  4. Arranges patient enrollment, determines patient eligibility and obtains informed consent.
  5. Develops study subject referral sources; designs and develops outreach programs.
  6. Collaborates with multidisciplinary researchers to coordinate research programs that integrate new advances in clinical trials.
  7. Delegates tasks and supervises the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut or Connecticut license eligible.

Salary Range

$68,000.00 - $120,500.00
