Research Officer
Job Description:

- Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 1 year.
- Base salary range: $83,212 – $92,231 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.
About the area
Dr Tim Langlois is responsible for leading fisheries, biodiversity and marine socio-economic within the UWA Oceans Institute and School of Biological Sciences to inform NESP Marine and Coastal Hub, WA Government and related research projects. The group needs a Research Officer who has skills or is willing to learn to use remote video methods for surveying habitat and fish in the field and in video annotation. Experience in R is essential and expertise in spatial modelling and the preparation of graphics would also be a benefit.
We also have growing collaborations with First Nations ranger groups that are increasing our opportunities for enriching and rewarding fieldwork around WA and developing teaching in field methods.
About the opportunity
- Support marine biodiversity and socio-economic research through remote video surveys, data annotation, and fieldwork, including collaborations with First Nations ranger groups.
- Assist with data management, analysis in R, and contribute to reports and publications, while maintaining and operating field equipment.
- Engage in training and mentoring of students and rangers, with opportunities to grow skills in spatial modelling, manuscript authorship, and research leadership.
About you
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Biological Science, with an Honours or Masters qualification in a marine related field preferable.
- Experienced at planning and undertaking field trips in remote areas.
- Ability to work independently, show initiative, problem solve and work productively as part of a team.
- Sound knowledge of non-destructive monitoring techniques for fish and habitat.
- Use R to generate and format data products.
Special Requirements
- Occasional interstate travel may be required.
- Occasional weekend work during field work.
- Some after-hours work may be required.
- Current “C” class driver’s license.
- Current First Aid and CPR (Desirable).
