Position Summary
Objectives of the PERSEUS project include developing a forest management simulation model that combines spatial data, forest growth and yield projections, and forest harvest scheduling assumptions to simulate forest management activities at broad scales of the eastern United States. The Research Professional I will work with colleagues in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, as well as the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Georgia, and similar colleagues from Purdue University and the University of Maine, to accomplish the data development and modeling goals associated with these objectives.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Strong interest in forest harvest scheduling, programming, data management, and spatial analysis with both vector and raster databases.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with groups of academic colleagues from other universities and other fields of research.
- Demonstrated interest in applied forest planning and an ability to work independently and as a team.
- A demonstrated ability to understand, manage, and analyze forest resource information (basal area, volume, etc.) and spatial data related to eastern United States forest systems, both vector and raster, and the ability to develop harvest planning scenarios simulating harvest activities at local and broad scales and across long time frames.
Physical Demands
- Work in front of a computer screen for several hours (with breaks as needed).
- Driving and some overnight travel.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Apply forest growth and yield models to generate projected future yields for tree species of the eastern United States across local and broad scales. (80%)
- Develop a harvest scheduling model to simulate forest management activities across the eastern United States. (80%)
- Produce reports and peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to the research project. (80%)
- Communicate regularly and in a timely fashion with the PIs regarding research and other issues relevant to the operation of the project. (10%)
- Present results of research at technical meetings. (10%)
- Attend regular meetings of the research group. (10%)
