Description
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Center for Arctic Study and Policy invites applications for a Research Professor of Arctic Studies. The desired start date is August 3, 2026.

This will be an appointment in the excepted service to a full-time temporary position on the academic faculty for an initial 1-year period. Non-competitive extensions past the initial contract period may be made in accordance with government instructions if a vacancy exists and are not to exceed 4 years after start date. The first two years of appointment to federal service is a trial period. The work schedule is full-time. This position is not eligible for telework and not eligible for remote work. All teaching is done in person. Relocation expenses are not authorized. Travel is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct rigorous academic research on Arctic-specific issues, and will deliver Arctic-related, undergraduate courses, seminars, or other academic instruction at CGA. Responsibilities within CASP include: (a) Conducting research in Arctic studies and policy and publication of resultant scholarship under the auspices of CASP; (b) Teaching within Arctic specialization; (c) Other facilitation of learning enrichment opportunities for cadets via speakers, travel, and contacts; (d) work as a faculty coadvisor to undergraduate advanced research projects; (e) mentorship of and collaboration with CASP staff and CGA faculty; (f) representation of CASP at international and domestic conferences and workshops as well as engagements with senior Coast Guard leadership; and (g) advising and providing input on the interdisciplinary curricular development in the areas of Arctic studies and policy.
Minimum Qualifications
- Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a discipline supporting Arctic studies and policy.
- Candidates must demonstrate a record of distinguished scholarship/publication relevant to contemporary Arctic issues.
- Candidates that are ABD must provide documentation that they will be awarded the terminal degree before 26 July 2026.
Preferred Qualifications
- Scholarship concentration may include: climate science; economics; operations research and data analytics; Arctic indigenous peoples/culture; ocean/maritime policy; international relations; political science; innovation; emergency management/preparedness and resiliency; maritime/international law; and organizational behavior and management.
- Have at least two years of higher education teaching experience, equivalent professional experience of candidates will also be considered;
- Have excellent interpersonal, teaching, and communication skills;
- Have excellent organizational and project management skills
- Candidates must be willing to travel in support of research agenda to locations including the Alaskan Arctic.
- Position requires a SECRET security clearance.
- Demonstrable experience consistent with a full commitment to the Coast Guard's core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.
