Job Description

The primary function of this position is to conduct research for the Center for Rural Energy Security (CRES; cres.missouri.edu) and to help lead a growing team of researchers to expand CRES’s research capacity. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to policy discussions and decision-making through policy briefs, op-eds, media interactions, and presentations to policy makers. Research projects may include both academic research activities as well as responses to policy maker and industry stakeholder inquiries.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead research projects assigned by the CRES director, including identifying data, research methods, and analytic tools.
  • Draft research papers and policy reports for publication and distribution.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to graduate research assistants to assist in research activities.
  • Assist the CRES Director in evaluating and prioritizing research projects in consultation with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and prepare proposals for external funding sources, including private foundations and state and federal agencies.
  • Collaborate with CRES affiliated faculty to generate research summaries for external stakeholder audiences.
  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of the University of Missouri.

Shift

Monday – Friday; 7:30-4:30 or 8:00-5:00

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree or higher in economics, agricultural economics, applied statistics, political science, public administration, or a similar research-oriented and quantitative field.

Three years’ experience conducting applied, quantitative research projects. Experience leading independent research projects and research teams is highly desirable.

Ability to effectively communicate research concepts, outcomes, and policy implications with varied groups of interested stakeholders and media, both written and verbally.

Experience writing grants for federal, state, and private philanthropic funding agencies.

Excellent quantitative empirical analysis skills and familiarity coding in STATA, R, and Python.

An ability to work collaboratively with academic scholars across social and physical science disciplines.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $52,915.20 - $73,008.00 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements. Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. The University of Missouri provides generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions that add to your bottom line.

The Center for Rural Energy Security (CRES) was established at the University of Missouri in Spring 2025 to create a nationally recognized, multidisciplinary energy policy research institute that provides unbiased policy research with a focus on the implications of federal and state energy policy and of technological innovation for rural communities, agriculture, and economic development. Under the leadership of both the College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources and the College of Arts & Science, CRES’s mission is to generate scholarly research that informs policy decision making and to educate policy makers and the public by producing accessible research reports, policy white papers, and media presentations.
