About the AUT Research Office | Te Kāhui Poipoi Rangahau

The AUT Research Office | Te Kāhui Poipoi Rangahau supports high‑quality, ethical, and impactful research across the university. We work collaboratively with staff and faculties to enable research excellence, secure external funding for AUT’s world leading research and strengthen AUT’s local and international research connections.

The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

We are seeking a Research Risk and Security Specialist to support AUT’s implementation of the national Trusted Research – Protective Security Requirements (TR‑PSR) and associated legislation. You will help AUT identify and manage risks relating to sensitive technologies and international research collaborations, and work with regulators, sector partners, and AUT colleagues to strengthen our institutional approach to research security.

This role involves:

  • Developing policies, tools, and processes for managing international research security risks.
  • Building and maintaining AUT’s sensitive research register and advising on appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Supporting due diligence processes for international research partnerships, visitors, and postgraduate admissions.
  • Advising on New Zealand export controls requirements and preparing export permit applications.
  • Providing guidance and training to researchers and support teams across AUT.
  • Contributing to sector best‑practice through national networks such as URONZ, UNZ, and ARMS.
  • Supporting the International Research Advisor on international funding matters, including contracting and compliance.

As part of the research funding team, you will work closely with the Director of the Research Office and with researchers, professional staff, relevant business units including ICT, Legal & Risk, the Graduate Research School, Research Ethics, and external regulatory bodies.

This is a unique opportunity to develop specialist expertise in a rapidly evolving, high‑impact field that is central to New Zealand’s national security and research integrity frameworks.

About You | Ko wai koe

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys solving complex problems, is comfortable interpreting legislation and technical information, and brings curiosity and initiative to emerging challenges — you’ll fit right in.

To be successful, you will bring:

  • Experience in a related field such as research administration, legal practice, risk management, compliance, policy, or security‑related roles.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, policy, or technical guidance to practical situations.
  • Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate research information and identify risks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly.
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A tertiary qualification relevant to the role (e.g., law, policy, science, engineering, international relations, security studies, or research management).
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and support for AUT’s Te Aronui Te Tiriti Framework.

Experience with export controls, sanctions regimes, international research collaboration, or protective security requirements is desirable but not essential — training and development will be supported.
