CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR A RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

A call is open for the award of one Research scholarship within the scope of the project ComPolDigit – “Competition policy in the digital era” (2024.16834.PEX), funded by National Funds through FCT, I.P., under the following conditions:

General requirements:
Candidates for the Research grant must, at the date of application, be enrolled, or present a commitment to enroll in a study cycle conferring an ( doctorate) degree in Economics or related areas. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in economics, management, mathematics, or a related field.
Specific requirements:
Candidates must also have knowledge/research experience in the following areas:
- Quantitative methods (e.g., game theory, econometrics models) applied to economic modelling.
Preferred Factors:
Will be considered preferred factors:
- Excellence of academic background (namely regarding the courses' component of the doctorate program the candidate is enrolled)
- Existence and scientific quality of master dissertation.
- Participation in research projects or collaboration with research teams.
- Participation at international conferences in Economics.
Note: Preference will be also given where the above criteria relate directly to the project’s research themes, namely:
- digital platforms and two-sided markets
- competition policy / economic regulation
Work Plan:
- Review of the recent economic literature on the digital economy, with a focus on the project’s core themes.
- Collaboration in the development of models and the analysis of research questions.
- Participation in regular working sessions with the research team members.
- Support in the drafting of a scientific article and/or technical report.
Objectives to be Achieved:
- Development of one working paper, co-authored with a member of the research team, related to one of the project's research tasks.
- Dissemination of project outputs at international scientific forums.

Workplace:
The work will be developed at the CEGE - Centro de Estudos em Gestão e Economia of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Portugal, in Porto, under the scientific supervision of Joana Pinho.
Duration of the scholarship:
The scholarship granted, on an exclusive basis, will have an initial duration of 10 months, with an expected start date of October 1, 2026. Any renewals may not exceed the project completion date (currently scheduled for 22/08/2027).
Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The amount of the scholarship corresponds to 1359,64€. according to the research scholarship values awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf) and will be paid by bank transfer.
Selection methods:
The selection methods to be used will be the following: i) curriculum evaluation (85%); ii) previous experience (15%). If necessary, the 3 best-positioned candidates may be interviewed, and in this case, the weighting will be curricular evaluation (60%).; ii) previous experience (10%) and selection interview (30%). Only candidates with a final classification equal to or greater than 50 points, on a scale of 0 to 100, will be selected for this position.
Applications that do not meet the admission requirements, are delivered on time, and incomplete applications will be considered ineligible.
Composition of the Selection Jury: President of the Jury: Joana Pinho, Effective Members: João Correia-da-Silva and Yassine Lefouili. Substitute Jury: Margarida Catalão-Lopes.
Form of advertising/notification of results:The jury deliberates in accordance with the selection criteria adopted and disclosed. The jury meetings minutes will contain a summary of the meeting content. After completing the application of the selection criteria, the jury proceeds with the elaboration of the ordered list, with the ranking of the approved candidates. The ranking list of eligible candidates will be published on the premises of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Porto, located at Rua de Diogo Botelho, 1327, 4169-005 Porto - Portugal, with each candidate being notified of his/her position on the list ranking of candidates via email. Ineligible applicants will be notified by email, with details of the missing eligibility elements.
Complaint and appeal procedures:Candidates have a period of ten working days, after the disclosure referred to in the previous number, to give their opinion at a prior hearing.
Deadline for acceptance of the scholarship:Within ten working days following notification of the grant award, the selected candidate must confirm in writing his/her availability to start the scholarship on the proposed date. Failing to do so or not having availability, the candidate placed in the next position will be called.
Application deadline and form of submission:
Candidates submit their application from August 10, 2026 until August 31, 2016. (until 5 pm, Lisbon time).

It will be necessary to submit the following documents:
- Cover letter, identifying the title and reference of the project, describe the motivation and professional objectives of the candidate.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae (should contain all the elements to assess the admission requirements, including language knowledge and research experience).
- Copy of the certificate(s) of qualifications conferring academic degree in the terms requested in the notice, which contain the final classifications.
- If the academic degree was awarded by foreign higher education institutions, the applicant must submit the respective Certificate of Recognition or a Declaration of Honour pledging to obtain the degree recognition in accordance with Portuguese legislation..
- Proof of registration or letter with the commitment to register/enroll in a degree-awarding study cycle under the terms already described in this notice .
Only applications received during the opening period of the above-mentioned call shall be considered. Candidates who incorrectly formalize their application or who do not prove the requirements of this call are excluded. False statements made by applicants will be punished under the law.
Mandatory documentation:
The following documents must be sent, at the time of the eventual granting of the scholarship, for the purposes of its contractualization:
- Copy of the ID/Passport document and Tax identification document(s) ;
- Copy of all academic degree certificates;
- Document of the registration of recognition of foreign academic degrees;
- Proof of registration in the course conferring the academic degree identified in this Notice.
- Statement by the supervisor(s) assuming responsibility for supervising the work plan, pursuant to article 5-A of the Research Fellowship Statute;
- Updated document proving compliance with the exclusive dedication regime.

2 The contracting of the research scholarship requires the candidate to provide enrollment in the degree-awarding course required in this notice. If the document is not presented within a maximum period of 30 days (in a row), counting from the date of communication of the selection to the candidate, the Jury Panel will have the power to disqualify the application due to failure to present the registration within the aforementioned period.
3 The availability of these documents can be replaced, at the option of the candidate, by the presentation in person at the financing entity, which will keep the elements contained therein that are relevant for the validity and execution of the contract, including the civil, fiscal and security identification numbers. social security, as well as the validity of the respective documents.
