RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP FOR MASTER – 1 VACANCIE

A call for tenders is open for one Research Scholarship for Master, within the scope of the projects “AMPIC Cascais | Sintra | Mafra – Conducting sampling campaigns and analysing data relating to biodiversity and habitats in the intertidal zone (Lot 1)”, funded through a service contract entered into with Sintra Municipal Council and “Percebe das Berlengas – The Resource and Us”, funded by Peniche Municipal Council, under the following conditions:
Scientific area: Biological Sciences.
Admission requirements:
- master degree in Biological Sciences or in related areas;
- driving licence;
- diving licence;
- local skipper licence;
- physical robustness indispensable to the exercise of the functions of the scholarship to which is applying;
Preferential factors will be considered:
- professional experience in ecological research and the monitoring of marine environments, with a focus on the planning and execution of sampling work involving the taxonomic identification of organisms and the assessment of their abundance, on subtidal hard substrates (using scuba diving) and in the intertidal zone;
- professional experience in studies on the ecology, harvesting and management of stalked barnacles harvesting, particularly in the Berlengas, along the central and south-western coasts of mainland Portugal;
- professional experience in liaising with fishermen and conducting surveys amongst them;
- experience in univariate and multivariate statistical analysis of ecological data using statistical software, and the preparation of technical and scientific reports, presentations and scientific articles.
As set forth FCT Research Scholarship Regulation No. 950/2019 of December 16, 2019, article 3 and 6, candidates for “BI” (Research Grants) must comply as a rule condition for the award of the scholarship, the effective inclusion in study cycles leading to the attribution of academic degrees or in courses not leading to an academic degree. Courses that do not confer an academic degree correspond to the courses provided for in subparagraph e) of paragraph 3 of article 4 of Decree-Law No. 74/2006 of 24 March and must be developed in a higher education institution in association with at least one R&D unit, including a course plan in one or several research areas of the unit.
Work plan:
The scholarship holder will join the team at the University of Évora responsible for the AMPIC and Percebe das Berlengas projects, collaborating across the various scientific, technical and dissemination activities associated with the projects.
The duties to be carried out as part of the fellowship include the following tasks, to be undertaken in Sines and along the coast of Cascais, Sintra, Mafra and Peniche: interacting with fishermen and barnacle harvesters and conducting surveys; laboratory work (such as the separation, taxonomic identification and morphological analysis of marine organisms) to be carried out mainly at CIEMAR, in Sines; participation in planning and sampling meetings; statistical and graphical analysis of data; and the drafting of technical-scientific reports and scientific articles.
Candidates must be available to carry out regular work at CIEMAR and to undertake frequent travel to the coastlines of Cascais, Sintra, Mafra and Peniche, as well as travel aboard vessels.
Applicable legislation and regulations: The granting of the Research Scholarship will be carried out upon the signing of a contract between the University of Évora and the scholarship holder, according to the version in Annex I, pursuant to the Research Scholarship Statute (Law no. 40/2004 of August 18, as amended) and considering the provisions of other applicable legislation and regulations, namely, the Research Grant Regulations of the University of Évora (published by Order no. 8131/2024, of July 22, 2024), and the Research Grant Regulations of the Science and Technology Foundation, I.P. Place of work: The work will be carried out at the Marine Sciences Laboratory of the University of Évora, in Sines, under the general coordination of the Administrator of the University of Évora and the scientific supervision of Dr. David Jacinto, who is required to draw up an opinion on the final activity report for the research grant (Annex II), in accordance with the draft set out in Annex III.
The project also includes fieldwork along the central coast, so candidates must be available for frequent travel.
Duration of the scholarship: The scholarship will have a duration of 6 months, starting during the month of September of 2026. The scholarship contract may be renewed until the end of the budget allocation of the funding projects, always considering the maximum duration for each type of scholarship, in accordance with Article 14 of the Research Grant Regulations of the University of Évora.
Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the scholarship corresponds to a €1 359,64, according to the table of scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf), payments being made monthly, by check or bank transfer.
Selection methods (with the respective value in percentage): curriculum evaluation (40%), professional experience in ecological research and the monitoring of marine environments, with a focus on the planning and execution of sampling work involving the taxonomic identification of organisms and the assessment of their abundance, on subtidal hard substrates (using scuba diving) and in the intertidal zone (20%); professional experience in studies on the ecology, harvesting and management of stalked barnacles harvesting, particularly in the Berlengas, along the central and south-western coasts of mainland Portugal (20%); professional experience in liaising with fishermen and conducting surveys amongst them (10%); experience in univariate and multivariate statistical analysis of ecological data using statistical software, and the preparation of technical and scientific reports, presentations and scientific articles (10%).

Advertising/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be publicized, through a list ordered by final grade obtained, posted in a visible and public place at the Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sines, and the approved candidate will be notified by email.
To ensure the right of prior hearing of interested parties, the Final Classification project will be announced by any written means to all interested parties.
After communicating the provisional list of the results of the evaluation, candidates have a period of 10 working days to express their opinion in a preliminary hearing of interested parties. Based on the final ranking list, a reserve selection list will be drawn up, to be used for the possible recruitment of new scholarship holders within the scope of this project, up to the duration of the scholarship, which may be used in the eventuality of the first ranked candidate withdrawing, failing to present the mandatory documentation, or in the event of the scholarship holder cancelling their scholarship early. In the eventuality that none of the candidates demonstrates the profile required to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship.
Application deadline and form of presentation of applications: The tender is open from 5 to 18 of August of 2026, and the results of the selection shall be published by 24 of August of 2026.
Applications must be formalized, obligatorily, by sending an application letter accompanied by the following documents: curriculum vitae of the candidate and photocopy of the qualification’s certificates. In the application letter, the candidate, obligatorily, must declare that he/she is physically fit to carry out the duties of the scholarship to which he/she is applying.
For the purposes of application, the evidence may be replaced by a declaration of honour signed by the candidate, but the failure to demonstrate that evidence, in the contracting phase, possession of the required degree on the deadline for application or the non-presentation of proof of enrolment in the study cycle or non-degree course, for scholarships with this component, imply the cancellation of the candidate's application.
Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require registration by a Portuguese Institution in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16 and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of January 25th.
