CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR A RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

A call for tenders is now open for the attribution of one Research Scholarship within the scope of the Project "WineSensor: AI-supported voltammetric sensor for monitoring wine oxidation" financed by Cork Supply Portugal, SA, under the following conditions, set out below.

General requirements:
Candidates for the research grant must, at the time of application, be enrolled or present a commitment to enroll in a doctoral program in Biotechnology or related areas. To initiate the contracting process, selected candidates must enroll in the Doctoral Program in Biotechnology at the School of Biotechnology, in alignment with the theme and work plan of the grant within the scope of the aforementioned project. Furthermore, this doctoral program must be completed at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and supervised by the team designated to implement the work plan.
Candidates must hold a master's degree in Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Food Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Innovation, or related fields, and meet the admission criteria of the general doctoral regulations of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
Specific requirements:
Candidates must also have knowledge/research experience in the following areas:
- Experience or training in spectroscopic techniques, namely UV-Vis, fluorescence, FTIR, NIR, Raman or other techniques applied to the characterisation of chemical, food or biological matrices.
- Knowledge of chemometrics and multivariate data analysis, including methods such as PCA, PLS, PLS-DA, multivariate regression, classification and model validation.
- Experience in the processing and interpretation of experimental data, preferably using tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, Origin, Unscrambler, SIMCA or equivalent software.
- Knowledge of analytical chemistry applied to food, environmental or biological matrices, with particular emphasis on experience in wine analysis, phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity or oxidation processes.
- Ability to develop, validate and apply analytical methodologies, including sample preparation, data acquisition, quality control, statistical analysis and critical interpretation of results.
Preferred Factors:
Will be considered preferred factors:
- Knowledge of machine learning and advanced data analysis, including classification, regression, variable selection, model validation and interpretation of results applied to experimental data.
- Experience in molecular biology, namely in techniques for the extraction, quantification and analysis of biomolecules, or in methodologies applied to the characterisation of biological, microbiological or food systems.
- Knowledge of applied electrochemistry, including techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance, or the development/application of electrochemical sensors.
- Experience in the integration of analytical data obtained from different techniques, such as spectroscopy, electrochemistry, biochemical assays and molecular methods.
- Ability to apply computational and statistical tools to the interpretation of experimental results, preferably using Python, R, MATLAB or equivalent software.
Work Plan:
The Research Fellow will participate in the following project tasks, namely:
- Preparation and characterisation of wine samples.
- Performance of spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses.
- Evaluation of the chemical/phytochemical profile of the samples, including phenolic compounds, oxidation markers and antioxidant activity.
- Development, optimisation, and validation of analytical methodologies.
- Statistical, chemometric and machine learning-based processing of the data obtained.
- Integration of analytical data to support sample classification and characterization.
- Support in the validation of sensors and rapid analytical methodologies.
- Monitoring and guidance of the experimental work to be carried out at Cork Supply, within the scope of the activities planned in the project.
- Preparation of reports, scientific communications and publications.

Workplace:
The work will be developed at the CBQF - Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina. of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Portugal, in Porto, under the scientific supervision of Antonio Cesar da Silva Ferreira.
Duration of the scholarship:
The scholarship, on an exclusive basis, will have an initial duration of 12 months, with an expected start date of November 1, 2026, and may be renewed up to a maximum total duration of 36 months for the research scholarship.
Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The amount of the scholarship corresponds to 1 359,64 €. according to the research scholarship values awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf) and will be paid by bank transfer.
Selection methods:
The selection methods to be used will be the following: i) curriculum evaluation (60%); ii) previous experience (40%). If necessary, the 3 best positioned candidates may be interviewed, and in this situation, the weighting will be curricular evaluation (50%).; ii) previous experience (30%) and selection interview (20%).
Only candidates with a final classification equal to or greater than 60 points, on a scale of 0 to 100, will be selected for this position.
Applications that do not meet the admission requirements, delivered on time and incomplete applications will be considered ineligible.
Composition of the Selection Jury: President of the Jury: António César Ferreira, Effective Members: Antonio Rangel and Sara Silva. Substitute Jury: Raquel Mesquita.
Form of advertising/notification of results: The jury deliberates in accordance with the selection criteria adopted and disclosed. The jury meetings minutes will contain a summary of the meeting content. After completing the application of the selection criteria, the jury proceeds with the elaboration of the ordered list, with the ranking of the approved candidates. The ranking list of eligible candidates will be published on the premises of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Porto, located at Rua de Diogo Botelho, 1327, 4169-005 Porto - Portugal, with each candidate being notified of his/her position on the list ranking of candidates via email. Ineligible applicants will be notified by email, with details of the missing eligibility elements.
Complaint and appeal procedures: Candidates have a period of ten working days, after the disclosure referred to in the previous number, to give their opinion at a prior hearing.
Deadline for acceptance of the scholarship: Within ten working days following notification of the grant award, the selected candidate must confirm in writing his/her availability to start the scholarship on the proposed date. Failing to do so or not having availability, the candidate placed in the next position will be called.

It will be necessary to submit the following documents:
- Cover letter, identifying the title and reference of the project, describe the motivation and professional objectives of the candidate.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae (should contain all the elements to assess the admission requirements, including language knowledge and research experience).
- Copy of the certificate(s) of qualifications conferring an academic degree in the terms requested in the notice, which contain the final classifications.
- Registration of recognition of the academic degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, preferably with the registration of the conversion of the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale to guarantee eligibility in this call for application.
- Proof of registration or letter with the commitment to register/enroll in a degree-awarding study cycle under the terms already described in this notice.
Only applications received during the opening period of the above-mentioned call shall be considered. Candidates who incorrectly formalize their application or who do not prove the requirements of this call are excluded. False statements made by applicants will be punished under the law.
