Offer Description
Scientific Advisor: Pedro José Oliveira Sebastião (ist12744)
Co-advisor(s): João Luís Maia Figueirinhas (ist11882), Departamento Física / CeFEMA.
Organic Unit: Department of Physics
Scholarship Theme: Proton and Florine Nuclear Magnetic Resonance study of the Molecular Dynamics study in organic compounds with molecular partially fluorinated and in the lyotropic phases of magnetic ionic liquids.
Duration: 4 months
Maximum Duration Including Renewals: 4 months
Objectives
We expect to complete the measurement of the 1H and 19F spin-lattice relaxation times for the H4F6, H6F6, and H6F8 samples over the high-frequency range from 10 MHz to 500 MHz. In addition the student will extend the investigation of molecular dynamics in the smectic phases of lyotropic magnetic ionic liquid crystals. Throughout the project, the student will acquire expertise in the study of systems where the paramagnetic contribution to nuclear magnetic relaxation plays a particularly important role, while simultaneously investigating the local ordering promoted by the microsegregation of regions with different electrical polarities.
Work Plan
- Complete the T1 measurements for the HnFm systems over the frequency range of 10–500 MHz (October).
- Measure T1 over the frequency range of 5 kHz–500 MHz for the lyotropic magnetic ionic liquid systems (October–November).
- Measure the self-diffusion coefficients of the different systems using Pulsed Field Gradient Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (PFG-NMR) (November).
- Analyse the T1 data obtained for the different systems (December).
Contest Procedure
