Research Scientist - AI for Health
About the AI(X) Hub
The Research Scientist will join the AI(X)Hub at the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge (ERIK) of The Ohio State University (https://aihub.osu.edu). The AI(X) Hub at The Ohio State University is a university-wide initiative to accelerate research, innovation, and education in artificial intelligence. It spans 15 colleges and aims to unlock exponential possibilities by fusing AI with expertise across six strategic pillars: foundations, health, engineering and sciences, agriculture, cybersecurity, and trustworthy AI.
Job Overview
This staff position is dedicated to the AI for Health Pillar, focusing on the development of AI solutions for diverse health-related applications. The Research Scientist will act as a primary technical lead and consultant, working with multidisciplinary experts across the OSU campus -- for example, including physicians, engineers, and scientists -- to design, implement, and scale innovative AI solutions. A key component of this role is bridging the gap between clinical needs and technical AI capabilities to foster high-impact health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Consulting and Solution Design: Provide expert technical consultation to faculty and staff to identify AI opportunities and design tailored AI-based solutions for health-related challenges.
- Research Leadership: Lead and support innovative team science research initiatives, advancing technology within the AI(X) Hub and the broader health care community on campus.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work within large, highly interdisciplinary teams to translate complex health problems into actionable and scalable AI projects.
- Grant and Project Development: Contribute significantly to grant development, securing external funding (e.g., NIH, NSF, ARPA-H), and managing the lifecycle of AI for Health programs.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics, or an equivalent/related terminal degree.
- Research Expertise: Demonstrated experience in conducting independent and collaborative research in AI for health, such as AI-driven therapeutics discovery, precision medicine, and AI implementation in health systems.
- Collaboration: Proven track record of working effectively in large teams such as those comprising physicians, administrators, and researchers across science, engineering, and medicine.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Scientific Rigor: A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals or proceedings.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in modern AI methods and tools (e.g., Large Language Models, instruction tuning) and experience with large-scale health datasets (e.g., electronic medical records, PCORI, histopathology and radiology images, multi-omics high-throughput sequencing data).
Desired Qualifications
- Funding: Experience in grant writing and development for health-related opportunities, specifically NIH or similar agencies.
- Operational Knowledge: Familiarity with health systems, health IT, hospital environments, and the ethical considerations of AI in healthcare.
- Management: Experience in project management, research administration, and mentoring junior researchers or students.
- Software Engineering: Experience with deploying AI models into production or clinical workflows.
How to Apply
Interested candidates must submit the following materials:
- Cover letter
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume
- A statement describing multidisciplinary research expertise and philosophy (limited to 3 pages)
- List of three professional references
The salary for this position will start at $140,000 annually and will be commensurate with education, experience, peer equity, and the available budget.
