Job Title: Research Scientist

Department: Engineering | Materials Science and Engineering

The Ohio State University, College of Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is seeking a Research Scientist.

Minimum Required Education is a PhD's Degree in Mechanical, Welding, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or a similar field. Candidate must have 7-11 years of relevant research experience with 10-15 years of relevant research experience preferred.

The Research Scientist should be fully experienced within the Research Laboratory environment. The Research Scientist will serve as a resource for Research Technicians, Graduate Research Associates, Undergraduate Research Assistants, and Undergraduate Students. The Research Scientist will apply their industry knowledge and a thorough understanding of the Research being performed to lead research and work independently. The Research Scientist will work on complex research projects of large scope within the Department. The Research Scientist will be able to complete routine work independently; while only requiring general guidance on new research initiatives and projects.

Specific research areas the Research Scientist will be involved in include the development of materials joining processes and metal additive manufacturing, creating new solutions in process automation, and materials analysis for the application of advanced materials. The Research Scientist must have comprehensive experience in all main scopes of welding research, including advanced welding processes, metallurgical analysis, and process/materials simulation and modeling.

From the welding process perspective, the required experience includes, but is not limited to:

  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and variations: Pulsed current (both DC and AC), GMAW with controlled short circuit, Cold Metal Transfer (CMT), Surface Tension Transfer (STT), Regulated Metal Deposition (RMD), Controlled Carbon and Carbon Dioxide (CCC), High-performance GMAW for deep penetration applications
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and variations: Pulsed current, GTAW with dynamic wire feeding (reciprocating wire)
  • Plasma Arc Welding (PAW) for high-performance applications (high welding speed and deep penetration)
  • Friction Stir Welding
  • High-Speed filming techniques for comprehensive evaluation and study of welding processes
  • Acquisition and interpretation of welding electric signals including voltage, current, power, wire feed speed, and gas flow rate.
  • Experience with offline programming for additive manufacturing in 6-axis robots is a differential.

The welding metallurgy and materials science knowledge and expertise required includes:

  • Metallographic samples preparation for several systems including but not limited to: Steels, Stainless Steels, Ni-based alloys, Ti alloys, Al Alloys, Refractory alloys
  • Optical microscopy analyses
  • Scanning electron microscopy analysis, including: Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) map analysis, including data analysis (IOM, HKL, Mtex), Prior grain reconstruction
  • Corrosion testing of metallic samples
  • Charpy impact test
  • Hardness testing, including: Macro, Micro and nano-indentation

The Materials and process modeling For modeling, the Research Scientist should have experience with:

  • Finite Element Method (FEM)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Calculation of Phase Diagrams (CALPHAD) modeling of materials

Additionally, proficiency with simulation software such as SolidWorks, Simufact, Thermo-Calc, COMSOL, Abaqus, SysWeld, and PowerMill is essential.

The Research Scientist will be involved in:

Laboratory work on:

  • Materials Joining Processes: May include but not limited to development, optimization and study of processes for materials joining and additive manufacturing.
  • Materials Testing and Analysis: May include but not limited to optical and electron microscopy analyses, chemical analyses, indentation, tensile testing, CVN, Diffusible Hydrogen, Thermo-mechanical simulation (Gleeble).
  • Simulation and Modeling: This may include but is not limited to performing FEM and fluid flow simulations of different processes to evaluate thermal, mechanical, and microstructural history associated with manufacturing processes and utilizing CALPHAD and other materials science methods to calculate phase stability and transformations.
  • Seeking R&D Funding and Proposals Preparation: This may include but is not limited to, continuously searching for funding opportunities and the associated preparation of proposals. It also includes writing entire proposals independently and leading teamwork for proposal writing and submission. It is expected that the research scientist will prepare and support the preparation of research proposals for government agencies and companies, some of which will bring substantial R&D funds for the team he works with.
  • Support research work of staff members, undergraduate and graduate students: This may include but is not limited to train or directly support the laboratory work, data analysis and writing of the team members.
  • Writing Scientific Reports and Papers: This may include but is not limited to Drafting, editing, and finalizing scientific reports and research papers for publication. Summarizing experimental results, methodologies, and conclusions accurately. Collaborating with research teams to ensure clarity and precision in documentation. Adhering to journal guidelines and formatting requirements. Other duties as assigned.
  • Teaching and Material Preparation: The research scientist will be involved in new courses material development and teaching of arc welding processes classes at the intermediate and advanced levels.

Additional Information: Location: Edison Joining Technology Center (0057) Position Type: Regular Scheduled Hours: 40 Shift: First Shift Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post offer process.
