Job Summary
The Research Scientist provides advanced skills in the design and execution of scientific research projects and to publish and publicize the results. This role is responsible for coordinating research projects supported by internal and external funding, including evaluation, long-term planning, design, implementation, performance, analysis and interpretation of results.
This is a grant-funded position, which may be extended or shortened based upon availability of funds and/or work.
Core Responsibilities
- Leads and executes advanced cybersecurity research projects, to include digital forensics, threat hunting, and incident response investigations.
- Designs and implements hands-on cybersecurity training environments, to include cloud-based forensic infrastructure and custom LMS platforms.
- Develops and maintains interactive simulations and real-world scenarios for cybersecurity education and workforce development.
- Conducts independent assessments of digital systems and publish findings to inform national security and policy.
- Serves as a technical authority in forensic analysis, malware reverse engineering, and compromise assessments across government and enterprise environments.
- Mentors students and professionals in cybersecurity and digital forensics through academic instruction and advisory roles.
- Represents the university at national conferences, workshops, and media engagements.
- Prepares and submits technical reports and proposals to secure internal and external research funding.
- Prepares and submits reports to granting agencies.
- Researches and submits documents to secure outside funding for research.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Masters degree in Computer Science or Cyber related field from an accredited institution.
- Three (3) years of independent research experience applicable to the specific program or project.
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Computer Science or Cyber related field from an accredited institution.
- Professional certifications such as CISSP, GCFA, GREM, OSCP, CEH.
- Eight (8) years experience in cybersecurity operations, digital forensics, and/or research leadership.
- Active security clearance preferred; must possess or be eligible to obtain upon hire.
- Similar experience in academic research environment.

- Demonstrated independent decision-making and problem-solving ability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Working Conditions
- Primarily at Main Campus and Downtown San Pedro I.
- Usual office conditions and laboratory conditions.
- Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events.
- After hours and weekend work is required on an occasional basis.
- Occasional after hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.
Physical Demands
- Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary, if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
- Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
