The Hogan Lab at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and scientifically curious individual to fill the position of laboratory research technician in the category of Research Specialist B. A central aspect of this job will be to learn new laboratory skills from a combination of in-lab training and consultation of the scientific literature, implement these skills successfully in scientific experiments, and pass on this knowledge to other laboratory colleagues.

Job Responsibilities

• Produce high-quality mRNA/lipid nanoparticle vaccines for our lab and for collaborators
• Help manage our lab's mouse colony
• Manage the daily affairs of our lab
• Provide technical support for lab colleagues as needed
• Initiate or develop scientific projects and collaborations on the topics of mRNA vaccines and immunity to viral infections and other diseases
• Discuss and present scientific research.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A degree in the biological sciences is preferred. The candidate must have prior lab experience producing synthetic mRNA, encapsulating mRNA in lipid nanoparticles, and working with laboratory mice (handling, injecting, breeding, and genotyping). The candidate must be self-motivated, capable of working independently, and able to follow verbal and written instructions and incorporate new feedback. A basic knowledge of biology and chemistry (at least equivalent to AP Biology/Chemistry knowledge), and excellent English communication skills. The most qualified individuals will also demonstrate an interest in scientific research in general, and mRNA vaccines and immunology in particular, an inquisitive nature, and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
