Research Study Assistant
Position Summary
The Department of Genetics and Development is looking to hire a Research Study Assistant to work in the laboratory of Dr. Shirasu-Hiza. The candidate will be research support staff for the Principal Investigator and other lab investigators, as needed. This is a one-year position, with possibility of extending to two years if funding allows.
Responsibilities
- Drosophila stock-changing; Drosophila husbandry and genetics; general research support, including preparing solutions, autoclaving, dishwashing, and maintaining lab safety.
- Equipment maintenance and lab cleaning to ensure compliance to all regulatory requirements; ordering and reconciling; maintenance of data backup; training of personnel in the use of equipment and research technologies.
- 50% maintenance of Drosophila stocks and general fly husbandry.
- 50% general research support, including ordering lab supplies, maintaining equipment, and maintaining lab safety.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor?s degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills; high level of organization; attention to detail; time management skills; motivation and dedication to research work; proficiency in working with computers, standard office and lab software, databases; ability to work in a highly independent and self-directed manner as well as in a team environment. Experience with Drosophila husbandry and genetics, as well as experience with managing a medium-sized Drosophila stock collection. The ideal candidate will also have experience with thin-layer chromatography for lipid measurements.
